PLEASE HELP! Chihuahua dog might be in labor, having puppies!!?

OK, i have a 9 year old long hair chihuahua. She mated with my 1 year old short hair chihuahua in late december of 07. She used to mate with my old dog, but never had puppies. I thought because of her age, she would never be able to have puppies. I got home from work today, and found her in her bed, full of a brown liquid. There was also a puddle of this brown liquid on the floor. I am concerned, im not sure if shes in labor, or is having a miscarriage. What should i do?!?!?! PLEASE HELP!!! is this normal???

It is not safe for the dog or puppies if the mother is older then 7 years old....even that is pushing it.

TAKE YOUR DOG TO A VET

Has she made a nest/bed? Does she look as though she is straining and licking down there? Call the vet and ask advise, you have to be carefull with Chihuahua's when they give birth as the pups heads can become stuck in the pelvic area due to them having larger heads than normal pups. She is also quite old to be having her first little. Your vet will tell you whether or not you need to take her in.

PLEASE HELP! Chihuahua dog might be in labor, having puppies!!?

vet NOW!!!! chihuahuas need a vet to delivery pups ANYWAY!!!!!

PLEASE HELP! Chihuahua dog might be in labor, having puppies!!?

I would take your dog to the vet. If for no other reason than the fact that she is 9 years old AND a chihuahua- 9 years is old, and chis can have issues with the birthing process.

PLEASE HELP! Chihuahua dog might be in labor, having puppies!!?

Get her to the vet NOW. She could well have a life threatening uterine infection and will die without treatment

PLEASE HELP! Chihuahua dog might be in labor, having puppies!!?

I think by now you should have gotten the message --- get your girl to a vet. Chi's can have real problems in delivering puppies...and honestly, if you didn't even know she was pregnant, how on earth are you going to know if/when she's in danger?

Nine years old is very, very old for a dog to be having her first litter. As someone else wrote, it's like your grandmother having her first baby at 70!

I hope your dog is ok...but I don't think she will be without prompt medical attention. GO to the VET....NOW

PLEASE HELP! Chihuahua dog might be in labor, having puppies!!?

Well, she's either in labour or she may even have a pyometra, which is common in unspayed bitches. It basically means the womb gets infected and full of pus. Sometimes this remains trapped, sometimes it leaks out.

Call the emergency vet for heavens sake!

If your dog is giving birth it will take some time.

PLEASE HELP! Chihuahua dog might be in labor, having puppies!!?

If she's pregnant and having her first litter at 9 she needs a vet. If she's not pregnant it may well be pyometra which is fatal without an emergency spay and antibiotics. She may need IV fluids too.

19 miles is nothing. In the car and go NOW!

PLEASE HELP! Chihuahua dog might be in labor, having puppies!!?

Im a vet, I work with horses but, Here is what you need to do.

Grab your dog, GO visit a vet in your area NOW, Brown no matter little or alot is a bad bad thing, If you value your dogs life go to the vet, Stop talking to people that have no clue what they are talking about.

By the way if the brown Liquid smells then you might aswell call a pet cemetery because you decided it was ok to play russian roulette with your dogs life.

FOUL odor means she has a bacteria infection and should probably be put to sleep.

Down maine vet clinic.

PLEASE HELP! Chihuahua dog might be in labor, having puppies!!?

First you need a vet not answers ring them asap.

chihuahuas are a very hard breed to breed from needs lots of research. If she is self whelping you should never leave her, it is very easy to get something wrong and you can loss your dog!

She is far to old to even consider breeding her, i cant believe you let them mate. You should not breed a chihuahua after 5 years of age!!!

I hope even thing gos well with her for her sake.

Is she panting, this is a sign she is ready to push, she need a whelping box to have pups in, i expect you havent got one, so a quite area where she can deliver and keep puts there for the next 8 weeks, she needs a hot water bottle with a blanket over the top. Claim her down and talk to her, when the head appears you need to open the sac so pup can breath you may need to help pup to breath, clear airway and rub pup to get him to breath, once put is out , clean, and breathing lay him on the hot water bottle and help mum with the next one. It can be possable for feet first which means you need to be very quick to open the bad if the bag breaks and only feet are out the chances are you will loss that pup because he would of drown. Mum will eat the afterbirth which is ok, but after 3 i would stop her as it can make her very loose.

once all are out sit with mum and make sure all pups are put to her for a feed. make sure she is in a warm room, safe and quiet. offer her some chicken as she will be hungrey and of course some water.

Hopefully she doesnt need a C-section, this is why you need to ring the vets now.

I hope everything goes ok for mum and the little ones.

Please dont sell the pup at an early age, they should never leave mum until the earliest 8 weeks.

maybe you could let us all no how things went.

PLEASE HELP! Chihuahua dog might be in labor, having puppies!!?

well you need a vet asap not answers.

at 9 she should of never been put in a situation where is could be mated. Get her spray if you are keep a boy dog.

She could be in labour having problems so you need the VET, or in un spayed bogs they can have an infection pyometra, which will lead to antibiotic and a sprayed and large vet bill and more importantly a very unwell, un happy little dog.

Infection in the lining of the uterus is established as a result of hormonal changes. Following oestrus ("season", or "heat"), hormone levels remain elevated for 8-10 weeks to prepare the uterus for, and maintain, pregnancy. If pregnancy does not occur the lining continues to increase in thickness until cysts form in the walls. This thickened cystic lining secretes fluids which are ideal for bacteria to thrive in. The wall of the uterus is also inhibited in its ability to contract and remove the cystic fluid. When infected by bacteria this fluid becomes pus. Sometimes the fluid becomes purrulent without bacteria being present.

This situation tends to become more intense as the ***** gets older, particularly if she has not been used for breeding. This explains why this condition usually effects older dogs. It can, however, occur in dogs of any age. Pyometra can be a possible complication of the use of hormonal treatments, for example when used as contraceptives, or to treat misalliance, and this is one of the main causes in younger bitches.

The cervix is the gateway to the uterus. It remains tightly closed except during a season or when giving birth. When it is open bacteria that are normally in the vagina can enter the uterus very easily. If the uterus is normal, the environment will not encourage bacterial survival, however when the uterine wall is thickened or cystic, perfect conditions exist for bacterial growth.

A general anaesthetic and ovario-hysterectomy, removing the ovaries and uterus of the *****, is the preferred treatment. Antibiotics will often be given for 1-2 weeks after the surgery.

Stitches will be in for 10 days and the dog must not lick them

lets keep our fingers crossed
