Injured lost dog! Pleae help!?

I found a lost dog last night who is still with me. I have called the authorities and the radio to find someone to claim her. She is so sweet. Anyhow, I don't mind keeping her until she is claimed or adopted. But she has an injured paw that is swollen, pink, hot and I noticed 2 of her nails are gone and the others are warn down to nothing. It must not hurt that bad because she let me squeeze it last night when I was seeing if it was broken. She is constantly licking it and it is almost twice the size of the other paw. How can I treat her (infection) injury without taking her to the vet that I can't afford especially since she is not my dog.

Do you also know what kind of dog she may be. She looks to be as part blue healer but who knows. She is a speckled brown gray with black spots and a white neck. She has brown eyes and her left eye is half blue. She is very short hair and a medium size tail. Please help.

The dogs foot really needs to be seen by a vet. If you can't take her and no one is claiming her take her to a shelter so she can get the care she needs...

Call your local Humane Society. Talk to them and see if they can somehow help you.

My best guess is that there is something inside the paw that has led to an infection or she got attacked or into a fight, which caused the nails to be ripped out- hence the hot skin. There really isn't anything you can do. If there is something in there and you try to take it out, you could make the infection worse and you could kill her. She also could lash out and bite you if you hurt her. You absolutely have to take her to the vet.

The only thing I can suggest is to get a bottle of Amoxicillian- it's a general antibiotic that I use whenever one of my cats has a cold. I'm not saying this absolutely will help her, but it's better than nothing. However, you need a prescription for it if you want to get it from a drug store and if you order it online it might not get to you before the infection spreads.

First, get down the swelling by putting some ice over his paw. Then I'd wash the paws with hot water and gentle soap, then gently cleanse it with alchohol. After its done, rinse, dry, and put some anitbiotic ointment on the paws and claws, get down deep and rub it in. If you can, rap some gauze around his paws so he doesn't lick it and get he wound infected. If there are any cuts or open wounds he should really be taken somewhere. Good luck. Be sure he drinks plenty of water and has some good food to eat. She could be an australian cattle dog, or australian shepherd if she has longer fur.

her paw may be filled with fluid and need to be drained. if you don't think anything is broken, then go with suggestion above and put ice on it, anything to get the swelling down. if it is red and swollen, it might be an infection more than an injury. see if there are any antibiotics you could give her.
