How do I stop my dog from itching?

I have two lab mixes. The youngest is a black lab / chow mix. He has a very "fuzzy" back and since a pup has had an "itchy" spot on his back. Vet said just due to his mixed coat and said no big deal. He said I could try trimming him, but didnt seem very concerned.

I got a home trimmer kit and it works pretty good. His hair is VERY thick right down the center of his back %26amp; shortening it up seems to help. Now I can get to it better when I bathe him and air gets to it more.

I feed him Natural Choice Lamb Meal and Rice food. I also give him DinoVite 2x a week mixed with a can of tuna (in oil), canola oil, and a dog vit.

I bathe him once a month. I've tried oatmeal shampoos, anti-itch shampoos, etc. All dog shampoos.

His itching is getting worse. The spot on his back still itches him like it always has (not ~as~ bad since I have been keeping him trimmed). However, now he itches under his hind quarters and his front 'elbows' until they are raw.

Anti-itch spray lasts an hour.

I have a 13 year old black lab who's had skin problems all his life (pretty common for labs). Try Neutrogena's extra strength T-Gel shampoo (for people)...it has tar in it, which is used in soaps to treat eczema in humans, and works really well on hot spots. I would recommend shaving or trimming very close around the hot spots until they are healed. I have used over the counter hydro-cortizone treatments, pure aloe vera gel (not cream!...it absorbs into the skin and cools the spot), and believe it or not, solarcaine spray...it's antiseptic and antibiotic, and also very cooling. Try ONE ofthese things at a time after cleansing and drying the area to see what works best for your dog. These are all "people" treatments, but they work (many of the medications and over the counter solutions for dogs are the same as for people with the same conditions, but the stuff made for humans is of higher quality). Good luck!

It could be an allergy.

I'd see a different vet. There are lots of dogs with mixed coats and thick fur that don't have problems with itching. It sounds like your vet is simply trying to avoid dealing with your dogs problem.

Poor pup!

Saounds like he has some kind of skin condition. Perhaps try a different vet or find one that specializes in skin conditions.

MAybe you shoudl bathe him more than once a month try doing it twice a month and try a lotion to make his skin mioust and it might work better.

Shaving him is a great idea, I just did that to my lab mix and I have never seen her happier. I give her benadryl 2x a day for the itching. She was constantly licking her paws and being itchy but with the benadryl it is mild to no itching/licking. This was advised from my vet as well being cheaper then an allergy medicine for her.

Also - Maybe your dog has a grass allergy? Does he role in the grass alot?
