What can you use for a dog who has a bad ordor???

My dad had to go to N.O. for a month and I have to dog sit. He's a pit bull and his breath stanks like rotting fish! I gave him a bath with some Head and Shoulders Refresh w/ cooling sensation for scalp and hair He also has a rash by his tail. My dad has medicine for that though. I even springled some mild baby powder on him this helped but he still stinks but not as bad . You have to be real close to him but at first he smelled the living room up. He's always been a house dog and we have high risk of west nile here where i stay so keeping him outside is out the question!! and what about his breath!! hopefully some of yall have home remedies cause i don't have the extra money!!

If he smells that bad and has skin problems (I bet he farts a lot too!!) he needs a change of diet! Commercial dog food has many ingredients that are inappropritate for our carnivore friends. Many dogs become intolerant to these ingredients and/or have trouble digesting it. A dog's digestive system is designed for prey and carrion NOT grains, vegetables and dairy.

The bad breath could be a combination of periodontal disease and poor digestion - the answer is the same though. Feed the dog RAW meaty bones and offal. The meat on the bones will floss between his teeth and massage his gums while the edible bones will scrape the plaque and tartar off his teeth. No need for a toothbrush let nature do its job!!

Many people change their dogs to a raw diet because of these issues and find there are vast improvements in the dogs' teeth and coat.

RAW bones are not dangerous (unlike cooked ones). Just make sure there is enough meat to help clean his mouth and the meal is large enough that the dog has to work for his dinner. Our stafford eats chicken quarters, lamb necks and pork trotters to name just a few meals. The general guide is to feed 70-80% meat, 10-15% edible bones and 10-15% offfal (at least half liver). Calculate this over a week or two.

Feed about 2-3% of his adult body weight per day. My 16.5 kg girl gets between 400 and 500 grams per day. She has been fed this way since 9 weeks of age and has sparkly white teeth with no hint of plaque. Neither does the 15 year old cat!

I hope the links help.

Call your vet and ask for suggestions

perhaps he needs to go to the vet to have his teeth cleaned. also, DO NOT USE HEAD AND SHOULDERS ON THE DOG!!

It sounds as though the dog has an infection. I would take it to the vet. My Cocker Spaniel is prone to ear infections, and one symptom is that he gets bad breath. His ears will have a fruity smell too. Chances are the dog needs an antibiotic. The skin rash can be a secondary infection. You should never use human shampoo on a dog. They need a dog shampoo as they have different needs than a human. I would never put baby powder on a dog either as they tend to lick and that is not something you want them to ingest. Please visit your vet ASAP.

You should not use human shampoo on a dog. If you had no choice, only use baby shampoo.

That cooling stuff probably irritated his skin even more. Especially where the rash is.

Did you put the medicine on his rash?

And about the breath, sounds like his teeth and gums are in bad shape. He may need a dental done.

To prevent plaque build-up, which causes bad breath, you need to provide dental chews and bones, as well as brush the dog's teeth with dog toothpaste.

Poor quality food can also cause the dog to smell, and can cause skin problems.

try putting some socks on his feet to prevent scratching you and place him in a nice warm bath using some dog shampoo and than after you bath him once bath him again using the same method. This should eliminate some of his odor if not all of it. than try using a blow dryer to help him dry instead of letting him air dry to hold that wet smell in his coat!! Hope this helps you.
