Myboyfriend is planning on getting a Brittany Spaniel for his bird dog. He intends to crop it's tail (to prevent it from getting stuck in the brush). I am morally opposed to this, no negoation is going to happen. If he does this, I don't feel that I can support someone with those beliefs. There is no need to alter an animal in this way to suit your hobby better-simply trim the tail hair so it doesn't get stuck. But it has become so main stream for the breed, it is almost a given. Like I said, this is against my morals, am I being rash for feeling that I could no longer be with him if he altered this dog?

I guess stick to your guns or you wont be happy. Are you going to be able to live with the end consequence of either 1) butchering Fido's tail or 2) Tellin your guy pal to kick rocks? Write a list, weight the pros and cons (good stuff and bad stuff), eat some ice cream, call your mom then sleep on it! and see how you feel..

It's a tough call, cuz on the one hand it's over a petty thing (I also am against tail-cropping and totally see your point), but on the other it's more an issue of not being able to compromise. If you can't agree on petty issues how will you two deal with important views like how to raise children or disciplining them or how to handle your finances.

Talk to him and express how strongly it means to you, and that you are willing to put your relationship on the line over it. If he's just as headstrong about it then maybe it is better you two find other people.

I agree with you that it doesn't seem right to alter animals just for their looks. (like Doberman's ears, or Rotweilers' tails) However, it does not hurt the animal to have its tail bobbed. Do some research of the pros and cons of doing this. there are far worse things that people do surgically to their pets, such as declawing cats, taking out a dog's voice box to prevent it from barking. Cutting the tail is not bad in comparison.

PS. How come it doesn't bother you that he hunts and and kills birds?
