HELP

Why does my dog run off and bite and good at home?

Wrong place to pick up advice on this behavior issue - you need to check with a trainer that works in behavior modification %26amp; obedience training for your dog. Petsmart trainers are not the answer either. You will need to invest in someone that can work with you and your dog and help you overcome this issue before it really does get out of hand. If you love him as much as you say - you are then willing to put in the time and money to get him over his behavior issues.

Please don't even think to put your dog to sleep. How big is your dog? Give him time to adjust to his new environment. Remember that dogs and cats are creatures of habits. You can control him on a leash can you not? Or maybe he needs some behavior modification. Be patience with him and when walking him, keep him very close to you. He won't bite if you are able to control him.

When he's at home, he's comfortable and feels safe. However, when he gets out, it's different atmosphere and different feelings. By what you say, and since you got him from a rescue, I would assume that at some point in his past he was scared, abused, neglected or had some trauma situation with a man, which is why he is going after men - "get them first before they get him" syndrome.

This can be worked through, but will take time. And professional assistance. Check with your local vet if there is a behavioralist in your area - do not assume that a regular obedience instructor has this ability - they may or may not.

While a personal behavioralist can be expensive, the only other option is to risk the dog being reported again. Any most places, the third report is means for putting the animal down.

not knowing the breed, I cant' say how much damage he could cause if he aggression continues. Not knowing the age, he may be getting old and grumpy, not knowing his history, you dont' know what imprinted on his original life that bothers him today. These are important things you will need to consider in the whole picture. If you have recently moved, you will need to be vigilant to things your dog possibly sees as a threat. He may not be settled and is fearful of the new sights and smells.

If you know as you seem to, that he's aggressive to certain types of people, you may need to enlist the help of a trainer to help overcome these specific problems. Or in the least get him accustomed to being around other people without the need to bite. Be firm in your response and specific to the action he is having. Don't pet him, or say in a nice voice, "its ok, don't do that..." You are the top dog, and in charge and should let him know.

If being out is turning him into a fear biter, you will need to continue as you are, and prevent him from getting out, and socializing him with walks only. Correct him for wrong behavior, and praise him for the right response. A treat for ignoring someone who may have frightened him. A treat for not barking, but looking at you in a situation he'd have been biting or running in. etc. All are simple, but require consistency from you.

There are book on behavior training, and you should at the least invest in getting something concrete you can work with now, and someone you can ask question on behavior training could help you too.

Tough situation, Best of luck

There's a good chance that your dog is afraid. You can learn about triggers, thresholds and counter conditioning. You might also consider getting a muzzle.

Visit www.fearfuldogs.com to learn about working with your dog. You do the same things with a fearful dog as you do with an aggressive dog.
