it's food allergies!! I bet he licks his feet excessively also and scratches or rubs his face on things too!! Most dogs that show signs of allergy show these common things. You need to change his diet to a lamb and rice or chicken and rice found in science diet or iams.

He definately should not be eating 4 cups of dog food a day!!You need to start taking a little off the top of the scoop gradually if you want him to loose some weight!!

He could have whats called a hematoma from shaking his head all the time. this happens when blood pools in the ear from them shaking his head hard. he will need to see a vet for this. The only treatment for this is to have surgery.

Take the Hartz flea collar off of him as Hartz can be deadly product. Go to the vet and get frontline or advantix for flea prevention!!

Does he have fleas? They could be irritating him enough to make him shake his head.

you can usually tell if your dog has ear mites if there is black "dirt" in his ears all the time.

you can't see mites without a microscope, but they poop a lot, and will leave a waxy, black residue behind. Usually when the dog shakes his head or scratches his ears, the waxy black stuff comes flying out.

if it is ear mites (and you should be very sure that it is before using any treatments) there are medications you can buy over the counter. try doing a search at 1800petmeds.com or drsfostersmith.com

He may have also been kicked around the head area at the same time if he was immediately behind the large animal. You might get some ear wash for his ears...treat them for a few days. Also, there is a powder treatment for ear mites. If he has suddenly gained weight and seems really tired all the time he may have low thyroid or be diabetic. Low thyroid is also the culprit in ear problems too sometimes. He really needs to be seen by a vet if he doesn't improve.

Go to the library and look up dogs and care. Also, for pets and care. Number one question back to you. If you were in his paws would you want to left to suffer ear disease for the consideration of money?

I'm glad you like the dog. Please consider his distress. There are items to use from pet stores. And dog soap in a bar or lotion should help. Daily care 2 or 3 times a day would not be amiss. Alcohol and olive oil after washing would help with infection and give some comfort and make the area less "choice" for the mites. They could just go into the ear canal though.

I'd use any suggestions that are feasible and healthy. But, only until I had the money to have a vet see him. It may be the least expensive in the long run.

Could be a yeast infection. A warm water and vinegar (50/50% solution) could do the trick, and even if it is not an infection, it will not harm him. Just put the solution in a catsup-type squirt bottle and squirt gently into the ears, then massage the opening of the ears with the skin flap of the ear itself.....and stand back! Have a paper towel handy. He will shake like crazy..... you might see black gunk come out. I have had this experience with a greyhound and the treatment did offer relief. Good luck!

you have asked a lot of questions. Dogs do not usually get ear mites. More likely your dog just has an ear infection and ear mite meds will not help that. You need to get your dog into your vet for some anitibiotics etc.
