Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

i recnetly took in a stray dog for a couple of nights as it had been roaming around for days. Unfortunately i cannot keep it as i have children who are allergic to the hair. I heard that if you take them to the pound they are put down after a week. Where can i take this dog without danger of the above??

Click on the drop down menu and click on your state and press GO.

There will be a list of shelters in your state and just try to find one near you. Sometimes it will say "no kill" but if not just call up and ask if they are. Is the dog friendly? If it is, they will probably take it and wash it up and put it in a foster home. If it is aggressive in anyway they will most likely put it down (even no kill shelters).

You can also take it to the local shelter and ask how long it can stay before it will get put down. Then call shelters/breed specific rescues (if you can figure out the breed). That way your kids wont be affected by the hair and the dog is safe and getting a meal. Hopefully you can find one and go back to the shelter and pick him up to take into their rescue.

Hope this helps and you find something that works!

There are organizations that don't put them down. My sister works for one in MI. It is called the Michigan Anti-Cruelty Society. If you live in another state or country you might do a search for one of these!

" take him to the nearest animal shelter. Or, if you plan to keep the animal in the event no owner is found, notify animal control that you have the animal or that you have taken him to a veterinary hospital for treatment. "

Take the dog to the pound. I know that it is not easy, but he has more chances of being adopted.

If you are afraid of the dog being Euthanized. Get the dog updated on his shots and have him shaved down at the groomers. That's the last option.

Take it to your local Humane Society, not the pound...they will put to sleep. The HS will keep it as long as it lives. Someone can adopt it as well.

If you are worried that they may be put down if not claimed or adopted, I'd try to find a local "no kill" shelter. We have several of those in our area.

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

put up signs and foster the dog as long as you can, keep it away from the children though. put ads in newspapers as well, someone's bound to come for it soon enough.

If you turn the dog in to animal control they are generally only required (by law) to hold the dog for 7 days. After this the dog will probably be put to sleep. Sometimes they give them more time if they have the space or if they have a director who is very motivated to adopt out animals rather than euthanize them. Some animal control facilities are very strict about destroying dogs after their required hold time to help control the spread of disease (there was a case in Nevada where the shelter was allowed to become over crowded out of a desire to help the animals and disease became a HUGE problem).

Can you first take it to a vet and have it scanned for a microchip? I would think that if you called and explained they would allow you to bring the dog in to be scanned without charging you. Have you tried to locate the dog's family or do you think it was dumped? Did it look well cared for at all? Does it have a discernible breed? If it does, you may have a good chance of finding help from a breed specific rescue. There are also all breed and mutt rescues out there as well. Sometimes they need a little time to find a foster home for the dog, so if you have a garage that doesn't get too hot or too cold, maybe you could continue to house the dog temporarily.

I don't know where you are located, but petfinder.com lists rescues and shelters by state and town. Don't be afraid to contact a rescue because it is too far away. Transports can be arranged if they are willing to take the dog in.

ETA: If you end up having to resort to taking the dog to the pound (you DO have to think about your children's health) please ask what their practices are on selling surplus animals for research. I know that there is an animal control facility near me that requires a payment from you if you don't want that to happen to the dog. Then they just put it down at the end of it's stay.

call the local dog catcher or humane society

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

a local no-kill shelter!

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

Take it to a Rescue Shelter.

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

First and foremost do not take the dog to an animal shelter. Like you said...they do put them down after so long of being there. I would call a local vet and find some numbers to an animal rescue facility or an no-kill shelter. It is likely that if this is a dog over a couple years of age they do not adopt out in an animal shelter as easily. Most shelters put the dogs down inhumanly as well in a gas chamber that suffocates them to death. You wouldn't want that on your mind now would you.

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

You must take it to the pound I'm afraid.

At the moment that dog still has a legal owner who can take him back at any time (Would you prefer the dog went back to a "home" where he was turfed out?)

The pound must keep the dog for a week to give its owner a chance to reclaim the dog. The owner will have no further claim on that dog once the week is up.

If the dog is not claimed during that week it will have a chance at being taken in by a rescue and being found a loving home.

Alternatively, maybe you could go back to the pound after 6 days and if the dog is still there, you could ask to take it on, short term until a new home can be found. That depends of course on how bad your childrens' allergies are and whether you are willing to risk that.

If you do go down that route, take advice from local rescue centres as to the best way to rehome the dog. You don't want the dog to end up with owners that aren't capable of providing for the dog.

Maybe you could even ask if they would be able to take the dog in. Although they may well be unable to, due to the number of dogs that are already in need of rescue, it might be worth a try.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx...

P.S. I'm not an expert, but I'm about 90% certain that the above is valid in the UK.

If you are in the UK, try asking somebody at a local rescue:

Click on the part of the map closest to where you live and there will be a list of rescues near you.

You need to get the dog checked for a tattoo or microchip first by a vet or shelter or dog warden as it could have a home with owners who are missing it. if no luck then ask around and find a shelter with a no kill policy.

Dogs trust, they never put a healthy dog down.
