What to do about my dog shivering?

The weather is getting cold in where I live and my 8-month-old Maltese puppy had her hair shaved several days ago (It was my sister's decision.) And now my dog shivers all the time. Even now, she's on my lap with big layers of blankets laying on top of her. And yet, she is shivering.

I bought a dog sweater and put it on her yesterday. She somehow managed to take it off and hid it somewhere.

Will she get used to this cold weather eventually, or should I do something about it?

You may want to find a fleece lined blanket for her or take a towel and warm it in the microwave for a couple of minutes and wrap her in it. She will get used to the cold weather but not until her hair grows back. Then she may not stop shivering. Maltese are normally nervous dogs. She is probably shivering because of the sudden change from having hair to going bald. I think your sister was wrong for shaving her this time of year. She will need to be kept warm. Also small dogs like yours can be easily shocked when something such as shaving happens to them. They don't understand what is going on and since your dog is so young she's probably wigged out.

Could it be nerves? If she is still shivering even when covered, I am thinking it is not just a "I'm cold!" issue.

Poor puppy :(

Keep it close to you for body heat. Blankets, etc. See if you can let it sleep with you at night. Let it outside only to go to the toilet. If you can let it go in your garage on a newspaper or something, all the better. Keep it close as much as possible. See if you can put hot water bottles in her bed, or an electric blanket for her.

And the above poster probably has a good point. It's probably shy that it's shaved. My dog was nervous as hell when she got her first shaves in the summer we got her.

But make sure she stays warm.

It could be many things...Some dogs shiver just to chiver ..

Like a Chihuahua? Stupid kids who think, "Oh! She's cold! Poor baby!" ..

No .. That dog is just shivering .. Just to ..shiver .. Lol.

Here's a site that a REAL DVM answers questions about other dog owners smaller breeds "trembling" problems.

He says its normal in smaller breeds.

Its not the cold. Unfortunately there may be something organically wrong with her.

my dog shivers in her sleep

Take the puppy to the vet. I think it's life is in danger. I had a neighbor that "trimmed" her golden in the summer for the heat. Poor dog died of heat stroke because his coat was there to insulate him from the heat. Unless you get tar or gum or something in a dogs hair you should NEVER shave them. You should be concerned if the dog shivers, could be trauma for life.

Turn up the heat.. and tell your sister to stay away from the dog. That was a ridiculous decision to shave the dog down when winter is well on it's way.. Let's see how well she does this winter, when you tell her that she doesn't need her winter coat!

This sounds more like a bad case of nerves to me. Was anyone with her when she was at the dog parlour? Has she been clipped before? I don't think this is a case of feeling the cold. Ask at the dog parlour if your' dog was upset while being clipped.
