What is the best way to disentangle the globs of hair that usually occurs among hairy dogs?

Clip off CAREFULLY or massage some oil-base hair conditioner on matts to loosen the tightness and then try to comb/brush out.

sounds wierd but get childrens detangle spray, its with the kids shampoo and soap.

You can get a dematting comb/brush that effective "cuts" through the matts. I use a pin brush on my dogs but they never get to the matted stage. You can also use scissors to cut the matted bits out but the dog can look a bit patchy after that.

Best thing to do is to keep your dog clipped short - you can shave it yourself if you have clippers. And give a quick (even 5 minute) brush every day.

My first suggestion would be to brush the dog more often to keep the globs from occurring. If you can't do that you can have them shaved shorter on a regular basis at the groomers. If you are doing this at home, use clippers, NOT scissors. If you use scissors you have more of a likely hood of cutting them. Sometimes a comb or undercoat rake are good to use.

First of all, NEVER take scissors to the mats, cause you don't know how close to the skin the mats really are, and you could seriously injur the animal. Shave the mats off with a 10 blade and only a 10 blade, If you don't feel comfortable, take it to a groomer. You'll just hurt the dog trying to comb them out. To avoid all that, BRUSH your dog every day, especially before baths.

Wash, then brush, the dog.

Well. i snip my dogs out even though everyone is saying you can hurt them seriously.. But it can happen i suppose. Take it to a groomer and get all its fur shaved off to where the matt goes up to if you want it to look normal- its fur all even-but get it a coat after-its winter!!, but if the matt is on the belly or somewhere it cant be seen you could try to cut it out (but be careful!!). Failing that, cut it out then layer its fur.. I did that to the top half of my dog and he looks sort of ok.. Yup, definately cute.

If it's just tangled a bit, try some kids detangling spray and comb through it carefully. If it's matted too badly to do this you'll have to get the dog a haircut. I wouldn't suggest doing it yourself unless you're an actual dog groomer because it can be painful (for the dog) and tricky (for you) to shave the matts out of the dog's coat. To prevent this problem with long-haired dogs, I'd suggest brushing your dogs coat for a few minutes everyday to keep it from getting tangly. Hope this helps!
