My dog smells horrible -- HELP!?

I have a pomeranian that I got from a friend because it was dropped off at her house and she couldn't take care of it.

It's an older dog and she smells horrible. Her breath has this horrible smell also. I brush her teeth and also give her a bath with deoderizing shampoo, which doesn't help at all.

She also has horrible mats but I can't take her to a professional groomer because I don't have her shot papers, they are still with the original owners.

Also, I've tried all kinda of flea treatments with her, even the ones from the vet, and she still has them and they won't go away.

Her behind also gets clogged up alot and I'll have to clean it out for her.

She has mats bad too all around her behind area, around her ears, and her front part of her body, below her head.

I know she was in a meth lab and that's why she was sent to the other owners and she's never had a real home and now she's happy but her hair is horrible.

Any help appreciated. Thank you so much!

My dog smells horrible -- HELP!?

Wow...I'm not sure where to start....

First of all...you really should get her to a vet. Bad breath is the first sign of dental problems. Older, smaller dogs are more prone to having dental problems. She may have bad teeth or gum disease. Although you are brushing her teeth...which is wonderful...a full dental by a veterinarian should be done. They are just like us...they need to have their teeth cleaned also.

Second...as for the mats...call your local veterinarian to see if they can remove the mats. She may not end up with the most beautiful coat in the world, but mats can be very painful on pets as the pull at the skin. If she has a terrible smell, she could have a skin infection that you are unable to see because of the mats. That could be why deoderizing shampoos aren't working. Removing the mats may help with the smell also.

Third...If there is a way to find out what vet the original owners took her too, you could call them for shot records. If not...and you would need to take her to the groomer, your vet can give her the recommended shots that the groomer is requiring. As long as it wasn't within the last couple months, it won't hurt the dog to be re-vaccinated.

Fourth...the flea situation. Are you treating your house as well? If you aren't...that's why the flea treatments aren't working. Flea treatments only last for 30 days at most...and you need to keep on top of the treatment. You also need to treat your house and furniture as well. Although flea bombs can work, I would try a product like Knock-Out, which is an aerosol spray. You control where the spray goes, so you can spray under couches and tables and inbetween cushions where fleas love to hide.

Fifth....by saying her behind gets "clogged"..do you mean she is constipated? If so, this should be brought to a vet's attention. You can try to feed her a small amount of canned pumpkin (like what you would use for baking a pie), but check with your vet on the amount for her size. You wouldn't want to give her too much and cause her to have diarrhea.

Now that she has a loving home and an owner who is wanting to take care of her...I'm sure you will be able to make the best decisions for her. I strongly urge you to take her and have her evaluated by a vet. They would be the most helpful.

Good Luck to you and your new addition!!!

Shave the dog and start fresh.

My dog smells horrible -- HELP!?

why not keep her comfy for tonight, and take her to a vet tomorrow? they will clean her up! she probably needs a dental cleaning, if she was neglected. expect to pay 300-500%26amp; for the procedure. don't get frightened by the cost-do it soon, and it won't cost more later!

Some vets actually have a groomer on site- try calling around and seeing what services a vet could do for you.

yea, I think you should just shave her (with those electric hair clipper things) to start fresh. Also, take her to the vet =]

This could be a problem.

Mats twist at the dogs sking. If there are alot of them, she would be in ALOT of pain. As for the smell, you should be able to wash that away with some more baths. Onto the fleas. This really needs to be taken care of because a dog can chew straight through it's paw in an atempt to kill the fleas. (Not kidding, i have seen it befour.)

All in all i sugest you take her to the vet imediatly.

You should ask a professional veterinarian in ways of treating your dog. I'm pretty sure there are a lot of ways. But, don't worry it will soon be removed after you ask a veterinarian. Your dog could have some disease or something but, just check and research online just in case.

I hope this helped a lot, GOOD LUCK!

Hang one of those car air fresheners from it's collar

Look into some area shelters also, tell them your situation. as long as the dog wasnt purchased by you from a pet store, they should be glad to help with her hair problem at a lower price.

Good luck, and good for you for doing a great thing

For the breath, the only thing that's really gonna help is a full dental cleaning, pricey but worth it. You can buy electric clippers at wal-mart for less than 20 bucks and shave her, clippers are much better than scissors. Start at the edge of the mat and slowly work your way under it, peeling the mat back like it was a rug. After she's shaved, do Frontline-Plus on her for fleas...you can't use frontline 48 hours before or after bathing, most common reason this product doesn't work is it was put on a wet dog right out of the bath. There needs to be some oil on the skin for it to work right. Keeping her behind clipped will help with the matting. She probably needs to be dewormed and put on a sensitive stomach food.

One thing I would do first, before you spend a lot of money on vet bills (like the dental), have some blood work done on her and make sure that's all OK. Kidney and liver disease sometimes causes bad body odors. With her age and previous environment, it's REALLY worth the money to do blood work. Heartworm test is a must, too. The body odor could also be from bacterial or yeast infection on the skin, you might find some open sores under those mats-it happens a lot. Keeping them clean and open to the air will help them heal if you find sores, and some Neosporin cream would be fine if she doesn't lick it off, but sometimes all you need to do is get the mats off so the skin can breathe and heal.

Good luck to you, and whatever happens, know that little dog is lucky to have you.

As a vet tech, I've seen this before. Your best bet is to bypass the groomer %26amp; take her to a vet's office.

They can do a number of things to help you.. First and foremost, get her teeth cleaned. They will sedate her while they do this. They will completly clean her teeth which will take away a lot to most of the odor coming from her mouth. While she is under, they can also remove those mats. They are VERY painful to remove even at the groomers. If she's sedated, she doesn't feel anything so they can be a little more aggresive. They will comb her out extensively. Thrid, they can bathe her there after she's awake %26amp; put on advantage or k9advantix. They will instruct you to put it on every three weeks if your having severe problems %26amp; to reapply every time you bathe (these products are not waterproof or toxic so they can be re applied). They can also clean her anals %26amp; shave around that area. It will get rid of any irritation to her %26amp; keep fecal matter from accumulating.

After all this, you can start a monthly maintenence with a groomer that will be less traumatic to her.

Dogs that smell on the outside AND have horrible breath is a STRONG indicator this dog is sick and has an infection. You should take her to the vet to be checked out %26amp; to receive antibiotics for any infection.

I brought a senior dachshund home from the pound and she stank....she had an infection and antibiotics cleared it up. Her mouth was in serious need of dental care as well, but she's fit and spunky today, versus looking like she was days away from death when I got her.

My dog smells horrible -- HELP!?

Take her to a Vet for exam, shots and worming. They will treat her just as they would treat a stray, meaning they will give her shots to be sure she is covered and then you will have the papers to have her shaved at a Groomer's if the Vet's office does not do that. My Vet's office does so you might want to check on that.

Make sure your Vet knows she was a rescue from a Meth lab and if you know how long she was in one, that would help too.

My dog smells horrible -- HELP!?

She needs a thorough professional cleaning and grooming. In addition to removing any mats and clogs, they will (upon request) clean her anal glands for you. These are two long ducts that run from the back legs up to the anal area. They secrete fluid that is used to mark territory. It stinks. That may be the problem. She could have a dermititis problem; but, that should have been discovered by the veterinarian. Also, the veterinarians in our area do professional teeth cleaning procedures on dogs. You may like to make an inquiry about it. She may need routine bathing, too. Some pet owners will bathe their dogs on a daily basis...refered to as humanizing the animal...some totally disagree with this treatment. Also, have her ears detailed at the groomers...the cerumen (wax) often accumulates so thickly that it will need to be professionally removed. Also removal of any ear hair that would hold the wax and bacteria would produce an offensive odor.

I hope these suggestions are helpful and of use. Bless you for helping the pet.
