I think my dog got stung, please help me.?

My dog, I believe got stung by a bee. It was just laying on the porch floor and he step on it with his back left leg. What do I do?

I have not been able to find any stinger, he is a golden , and has a lot of hair.

I think my dog got stung, please help me.?

Just watch for extream swelling or if your dog starts to show sign of difficulty breathing if that occurs then get the dog to the vets. If not than just get a cold wash cloth and place it on the paw!

I think my dog got stung, please help me.?

he'll be fine. our pitbull got stung on the mouth over the summer, all i could do was keep ice on it, until her lip got too cold. the swelling went down overnight.

I think my dog got stung, please help me.?

you shouldnt worry about anything, i have a border collie,(also has long hair) and bee stings dont harm the dog at all, they dont hurt, nothing bad happens dont worry hes totally fine

I think my dog got stung, please help me.?

My kittens that lived under my porch got stung. My mom and I were cleaning it out and trying not to bother the kittend much, then we sweap over a spot then hundreds of bees were all over! Soon they were gone then the little white kitten came running on 3 feet the other one was going over his face. I Felt so bad but after a while he forgot. Your dog should be fine. If you can't find the stinger and there is one pretty soon your dog will lick it and lick it then it will be a wet so you can see the paw better then get it out.

I think my dog got stung, please help me.?

oh. your dog will be fine. dont worry

I think my dog got stung, please help me.?

well as long as he seems OK and hasn't gone into shock or his airway is obstructed through swollen tongue etc

then leave him be and keep eye on him,if he is showing signs of allergic reaction to a bee sting he needs to get to a vet for a animal anti-histamine injection or Adrenalin injection

I think my dog got stung, please help me.?

Benadryl- 1 mg per pound is the correct dosage but not to exceed 2 capsules in one dosing.

I have worked for several vets and NONE of them have ever recommended more than two capsules per dosing - regardless of the size. Think about it- adult humans weigh more than a large dog and we do not exceed two tablets per dosing.

I think my dog got stung, please help me.?

He should be fine....

My Lab got stung on her face once %26amp; her whole face was swollen around her eyes etc... but she wasn't having trouble breathing and seemed fine otherwise so i didn't take her to a vet, just kept an eye on her... the swelling was gone the next day.

I think my dog got stung, please help me.?

i think you can give benedryl

1mg per lb.

but that may not even be needed if there is no reaction

I think my dog got stung, please help me.?

My Lilli (who is a rough coat mixed breed ) climbed the fence and got into a yellowjacket nest about a year ago. Poor little thing had at least a dozen yellowjackets matted in her coat. The vet told me to give her a benadryl and watch her. She was fine. She is a 50 lb terrier mix , so one benadryl was enough for her.

I think my dog has mange??

My dog is 5 years old and I think she has mange. She is always itching, she smells, pulls out hair and her skin is all red and sometimes she scratches so much that she bleeds. We've taken her to the vet and he cannot find whats wrong with her. He's given us pills and other medicine for her and it didnt really help. How can we get rid of this?? we dont want to take her to the vet anymore because we've spent $600 so far...

I think my dog has mange??

5 yo is a little old to have mange unless she was around another dog with it. mange usually affects puppies and young dogs. sounds more like allergies. what kind of food is she on? what medications did you try? you might want to have her allergy tested. she could have environmental allergies or food allergies.

I think my dog has mange??

I would take your dog to a different vet it is obvious your dog has a serious skin infection and needs to be treated, in the mean time try giving him a bath in some shampoo that has oatmeal in it you can find it in the pet section at wal mart and im sure other pet stores will have it to. this helps with the itching.

I think my dog has mange??

It's VERY uncommon for an adult dog to catch mange. It doesn't sound like the problem here.

Did they do skin scrapings?

It sounds like she has an allergy, and hot spots.

Take a look at what you're feeding her - is there corn, wheat, or soy in it? Is the first ingredient meat?

If you can, I would get her allergy tested.

Give a Vitamin E supplement, salmon oil, raw egg, and yogurt to help with her skin/coat.

I think my dog has mange??

Find a better vet. if you're not willing to spend more money to help your dog, surrender it to a rescue.

I think my dog has mange??

Sorry but you will need to take your dog to the vet to get this diagnosed properly in order for it to be treated correctly. Your dog is suffering no matter what is causing it. Get a second opinion and go to a different vet but you must take your dog. I have a dog with a skin problem caused by an allergy to dust and forage mites and he cost in excess of 鎷?00 to diagnose and begin treatment that will be life long (thank goodness he's insured). Unfortunately dog ownership isn't cheap and sometimes you just have to tighten your belt to make sure that they have the treatment they need.

I think my dog has mange??

Get a very mild dog shampoo and bathe her, see if you can find one that has a natural lanolin in it to soften her skin.

If she eats dry dog food mix a little corn oil into it. She could have allergies to the food she is eating or something in your home, cleaners, treats off the table, dust.

She could also have an anxiety problem where she pulls at her own hair. If your house is dry, get a humidifier. Groom her carefully and check for fleas or other mites.

If you have spent this amount on your vet so far and they can't figure it out, you need to get another more diligent vet.

Purina has an on line vet at:

www.purinaone.com/online_vet.asp

or try:

www.free-online-veterinarian-advice.co...

petfinder.com also has a forum where you can ask questions. Good luck

I think my dog has mange??

Sounds like staph and NOT mange. She (or he) sounds too old for mange. If she has fleas , even 1 flea can set it off, and she continues scratching, it just comes right back. Its kinda like a mosquito bite, the more you scratch it, it gets yucky and causes the staph. Its NOT the same kind of staph that people get.

I think my dog has mange??

try going to tractor supply and getting sheep dipp.. dulte a little b4 applying

Dog eating paper?

My dog has been eating alot of paper, he also has been chewing on plastic bottle caps and God knows what. He has thrown up twice over the Holidays, we thought just from excitement. There seemd to be alot of hair in his vomit. Today we took him for a run and he had a small amount of bleeding from hismoth. He may have just bit his tongue or something. We don't have alot ofmoneyfor a vet bill right now because of Christmas. What should we do?

Dog eating paper?

You should make sure and supervise what your dog is chewing on. Buy him some chew toys. All that paper and plastic bottle caps will make him sick. The bottle caps are a no-no!! They could tear something inside his belly and then you would be REALLY paying for a vet bill!!! Make sure and buy him some toys!!

Dog eating paper?

well.....does your dog have a bone or something to chew on? thats probably y he is chewing on paper and stuff. the bleeding in his mouth... cant help with that.

Dog eating paper?

sorry to here about your dog, i would try and stop him from eating the paper and incourage him with regular dog food, and maye try to get him to the veteranerian after the holidays if it keeps up

Dog eating paper?

my dog is the same way...i dont know what to do either....im thinkin about taking my dog to the vet or something

Dog eating paper?

I would say the best way to save the dog and the vet bill would be to clean up your floor. Make sure there is nothing that your dog can reach that he is not allowed to have. This will sound silly, but get on your hands and knees and go through the house remove everything that you see that is on his level. Get him several bones and other chew toys that he is allowed to chew on. This way he will not get sick, and you won't have to take him to the vet.

Dog eating paper?

get a him a bone or chew toy.. because just like babies dogs do ((not sure how to spell it, but i'm sure you'll know what i mean)) teethe??

Dog eating paper?

My Lab eats paper as well. I have bought him treats, he has food available to him, dog toys, bones etc. I begin to think it is in there nature.

I continue to watch him, I continue to say, " no," when he goes for the paper.

Dog eating paper?

Firs of all, dogs should be supervised with everything they put into their mouths.

Vomiting in pets is VERY SERIOUS and should not be taken lightly. You should call your vet and see what they say. If your dog has something lodged in it's intestines, it could be tearing the tissue. The longer you wait, the more damage it will do.

My dog had a similar situation happen, he ate a needle. I called the vet and after they asked me several questions, they recommended I feed him an entire loaf of bread. They said the bread would form a ball and help him pass the needle, and it did.

Please, please, please do not take this as professional advice. I am not a vet. I recommend that you first call your vet and get advice from them. They know your dog's history and can better advise you on your particular situation.

Believe me, I know what you mean about vet bills. I just spent $4,000 on surgery for my dog. Being a responsible pet owner means being able to pay vet bills. If you are in a situation where you can't afford your pet's vet bills, there are a lot of organizations out there that will help you with the bill. Please don't avoid seeing a vet because of the cost. Your pet's life could depend on it.

I hope your pooch is okay. Good luck!

Dog eating paper?

O.K. You ask for it !! Alot of people are going to be telling you like it is!! If they are pet people !! First of all____ Why aren't you watching your dog to make sure he/she isn't eating or chewing on something that could kill him.her???!! If you were watching it then you wouldn't be having to worrying about what it could of ate and worrying about taking it to the vet now and no money!!! A dog is like having a child ,you have to watch it , you wouldn't let a child chew on bottle caps would you ,cause you know it could get choked to death, well so can your dog, or it can get lodged inside the dog and then kill it if not removed by surgury! You are asking for trouble if you don't watch your pet and as a pet owner you are responsible to take good care of your pet, if you love your pet! You are responsible to make sure your pet doesn't eat something that can make it sick or even kill it !! You shouldn't let it eat papers or anything that could harm your pet! Give your pet proper chew toys and chew bones for it !! Take away what ever your pet gets that is bad or harmful to him and say NO firmly and right after that give him a chew bone or a chew toy, and say good boy! So he learns that it is o.k. to chew on the chew bones and not the ones you say NO too !! it takes time but it will learn if you keep it up !! And always provide correct chewing toys and bones. Dogs get bored and like chewing, mine have chew toys all over the house, so they won't chew on other stuff! Why would they when they got plenty of good stuff to chew on?? You really should take better care and watch over your pet, if you really care about it!!! I 'm not being mean, just honest and direct!! Any pet owner will tell you the same!! If he's throwing up you best be ready to take him to a vet and not put it off! Ask your self whats more important, a gift that can be bought again and replaced or a pet you love that can't be replaced! A living creature!! what do you think? Stuff can be bought again and its just stuff, and you can get another dog but it wouldn't be the same dog at all !! plus a Life is more important then any thing you can buy !!

Dog whines at night?

My dog sleeps in a kennel in the house at night and he whines a lot during the night. He is a miniature daschund and has short hair. We have tried leaving a light on, leaving a radio on and getting him a new bed that has hight sides on it in case he was getting cold. We tried leaving him out of the cage for a night and he just ran all over the house making lots of noise. Help!! We are not sleeping very well. He is almost two years old and we have had him since he was bout six months old. He just started doing this about a month ago.

Dog whines at night?

I'm sure the dog wisperer (you know that show?) would tell you that he needs much more exercise and stimulation during the day to be ready to sleep at night. Just like humans!

Dog whines at night?

maybe you could let him sleep with you, he might just miss you or something, because my dog cries and yelps when he is in his cage

Dog whines at night?

somthing is probley scaring him at night, or he may be sick and uncomfortible, try moving him to a different locasion, or have him sleep with you. poor baby

Dog whines at night?

He might be lonely. When we first got our dog, we let her sleep beside the bed for awhile until she got used to going to sleep by herself.

Dog whines at night?

the dog probally has to go pee. my dogs do this when they want to go outside to go to the bathroom.

Dog whines at night?

maybe he wants you,he's sad he's having a nightmare cause when that happens to my dog i have to sing or scratch his stomach so try to find out what comforts your dog

hope this helped

Dog whines at night?

try giving him a stuffed animal for him to sleep with at night my dog done has done this too... he would whine at night at first when we first got him and then he got used to his bed then all of the sudden he started whinning agian like he did when we first got him and we put a stuffed animal in there for him to sleep with and that seemed to help,,, now he just cuddles up with it and also we put a big blanket in there with him and covers him self and the animal up and goes right to sleep,,,, I hope this helps and good luck

Dog whines at night?

My puppies whine when they want to be with me, when they want to be fed or when they want to go outside. It's probably one of those three.

Dog whines at night?

Something might be upseting him. Try putting a sheet over his cage when it is bed time. You could also but a favorite chew toy in the cage with him as well. Don't come out to him each time he whines.

Best of Luck.

Dog whines at night?

I would put the cage in the room with you that way he is close to you and he is still in the cage. Because you do not want to let him sleep with you because you can never stop once you start but he probably just wants to be close to you.

Dog whines at night?

It's his first time being in there for a while.Just ignore it he will fall asleep.

Dog with a nasty sore...?

My friend has a Pomeranian and its a little over a year and it recently got some little spot on it. At first it was just missing hair and looked like she had fleas or something. But now, a little over a week later I saw it again and it looks like a red ring around a wet looking yellow area. Almost like its puss. She's so worried but she is already up to her ears in debt and can't afford a vet...the dog is acting fine I just wish I had some clue as to what to tell her....I don't know what ringworm looks like but I hope its not that!!!

Dog with a nasty sore...?

that sounds like ringworm. Loss of hair, puss and a yellow area with a yellow or red ring is usually a ring worm.

Take her to the vet or a humane society with a vet on hand.

sometimes a humane society will help out low income families or those who can't afford treatments. They have vets on hand- and they can offer discounts and payment plans. Some even do some proceedures free of charge if you qualify.

and vets can do payment plans as well as offer discounts.

maybe you can help her out as her friend?

but please for the health of your friend AND the dog, the dog needs to be treated... ring worm is contagious and transmittable.

here are pictures.

---edit to answer more of your question--

you can get ringworm anywhere

Ringworm is widespread around the world and in the United States. The fungus that causes scalp Ringworm lives in humans and animals. The fungus that causes Ringworm of the body lives in humans, animals, and soil.

he could have gotten it from a person, from an area he was playing in, from contact with another animal.

It is HIGHLY contagious and EASILY spredable. She can get it just from petting him and being into close proximity with him.

Scalp Ringworm usually appears 10 to 14 days after contact, and Ringworm of the skin 4 to 10 days after contact.

The time between exposure and symptoms isnot known for the other types of Ringworm

Ringworm of the scalp usually begins as a small pimple that becomes larger, leaving scaly patches of temporary baldness. Infected hairs become brittle and break off easily. Yellowish crusty areas sometimes develop.

Ringworm of the body shows up as a flat, round patch anywhere on the skin except for the scalp and feet. The groin is a common area of infection (groin Ringworm). As the rash gradually expands, its center clears to produce a ring. More than one patch might appear, and the patches can overlap. The area is sometimes itchy.

Ringworm of the foot is also called athlete's foot. It appears as a scaling or cracking of the skin, especially between the toes.

Ringworm of the nails causes the affected nails to become thicker, discolored, and brittle, or to become chalky and disintegrate.

after diagnosis and a treatment plan is given

Complete treatment as instructed, even after symptoms disappear.

Do not share towels, hats, clothing, or other personal items with others.

Minimize close contact with others until treated.

Make sure the person or animal that was the source of infection gets treated.

You may need to see a human doctor to get a preventative. You've been exposed, if it IS ringworm, you may as well go through the treatment to protect yourself.

ask your vet if that will be necessary

Dog with a nasty sore...?

Cheap fix.......

Sulfur %26amp; oil............50/50 paste

Dog with a nasty sore...?

thats what it sounds like. Some vets offices will make payment arrangements for people like your friend. Just have her call your local ASPCA and ask them where she could take her dog

Dog with a nasty sore...?

probably she is going to have to borrow some money...the vet is the only one who can give an antibiotic for this condition in the mean time I would use some neosporin (not the kind with pain relief in it) you can get the store brand at walmart for $2 just to start the healing of it because if you dont do something its just going to get worse and you dont want poor doggy to suffer

Dog with a nasty sore...?

It sounds like a hot spot. You will tell your friend to get the dog to the vets. It is infected and need to be look at and treated. If left untreated it will spread and the dog will eventually get sick.

Dog with a nasty sore...?

Please find a way to get it to a vet. It needs to be treated.

Dog with a nasty sore...?

Hello...well she can try cleaning it with providine iodine available @ pharms, wal marts, grocery stores %26amp; a dab of neosporin...it could be an infection and usually they're OK if they open up %26amp; drain in their own, especially if the dog can lick it to keep it open..otherwise you have to do that AFTER the first pop ( sorry couldn't think of what else to say ) it may get a little bigger, before it heals ...best to just keep an eye on it...if it really turns for the worse, then time for a VET..or many Spay %26amp; Neuter clinics have VETS, cheaper %26amp; very good ...inside or pampered pets can't really heal Nature's way like outside animals, which flies are good for !!! Take Care :)

Dog with a nasty sore...?

Try cleaning the area with Hydrogen Peroxide if it fizzes then it is infected. She can put some triple antibiotic on it and see if it gets better. Like Neosporin but there are generic ones that are cheaper. She could also clean the area with Betadine.. that is what is used in most hospitals when some one is going to have surgery. Try that and see if that clears up the area.

Dog with a nasty sore...?

I can tell you how to check for ringworm. Just put the dog under a black light. If the spot glows then it is ringworm. The fungus reacts to that type of lighting. Just remember that ringworm IS contagious and it can be spread from animal to animal and animal to people!!!

Best sheets for shedding dog?

We like having our dog sleep with us. She sheds a lot in the winter and these new sheets I got seem really matte and the hair just sticks. Has anyone noticed a certain thread count or material type that holds less hair? Any good suggestions appreciated.

Best sheets for shedding dog?

We bought king sized Flat hotel sheets at Sam's club. They came 6 to a package.

When any of our dogs are on the bed, we put one of those sheets on top of everything else. It keeps the dog hair off the quilts and sheets underneath.

When they are hairy or dirty, I just replace them with a new one. Once a week I wash 2 or 3 of them.

Works for us and we have 5 dogs, 4 are labs and they shed a ton.

Best sheets for shedding dog?

all sheets can get dog hair on them.

Best sheets for shedding dog?

I have huskies that like to sleep on the bed. I've found the sheets made out of the t-shirt type material work best. I can usually brush hair right off of the sheet. Or just take the sheet off the bed, shake it out once or twice and replace it.

Best sheets for shedding dog?

there's a vitamin supplement you can give her to reduce shedding. but it seems to me if you give it to her and she can't shed, she may be uncomfortably hot inside. you don't mention her breed or hair type, but do you brush her? maybe brushing at bed time would help.

I love my dog..........what to do?

I have an 8yo black lab who has been my best friend since she was 3mths old. I've since married and have three children and she still continues to be the best dog.....great with the kids and everything. Okay this has nothing to do with my question.

Anyway, two years ago she developed a tumor on a lymphnode in her neck. It is benign, but has affected her immune system in some way. About one year ago she got a severe case of mange and now has it chronically due to her compromised immune system. The mange, of course, causes her to lose large amounts of hair and she develops sores and skin infections from itching. This flares up about every three months and I have her dipped at the vet's office. This consists of three dips, each three weeks apart, and costs me about $200. I can no longer afford to do this, but I can't allow her to live with sores and itching all the time either.

Are there any other options? Remember she is 8yrs old.......I can't bare to put her down for this, though.

I love my dog..........what to do?

talk to your vet and see if thier is some kind of home remedy you can use at home to make the infections go away. My beagle mix dog constatnly gets ear infections and i acutally came on here, and got information how to make a home rememdy of the same stuff the vet uses. It was a simple mixture on my part, and i am sure yours can too.. check at the pet store too, because they sell stuff for sores and to stop itching it will most defitly be cheaper than the vet,

Good luck to you! DOn't put her down and don't give her away find another way to make it work!

I love my dog..........what to do?

if you have to go through all that then just put her down

I love my dog..........what to do?

Have a chat to your vet or maybe see someone else for a second opinion. If this is compromising her quality of life and does not look like it will get any better maybe having her put to sleep is a better option, for her sake.

Otherwise you could look at rehoming her.

I love my dog..........what to do?

You should by now have a relatonship with the vet. See if you can talk with him/her about this and ask if there is anyway that you can purchace the dip and continue the treatments at home. Dipping a dog is not a complicated procedure and you can learn it easily. This could cut the cost WAY down and make it more affordable to you.

If this vet says no and does not have a good enough answer as to why... Ask your friends for the names of their vets and hunt, hunt, hunt... You will find a compassionate vet out there somewhere that will help you.

Good luck to you and your poor itchy pup!

~Tyed~

If you do not mind. Can you tell me the name of the dip. I would like to do little research and call a couple of vets that I know and see what their take on this situation is.

I love my dog..........what to do?

Perhaps you should do some reaearch and see if there is some sort of immune support vitams and minerals that you could give your dog to help to support her immune system. Ask another vet for a second opinion. Mange can be treated in different ways. Perhaps another vet can come up with a therapy that will eliminate the mange.

I love my dog..........what to do?

If you can't afford to treat the pet, look for a local dog rescue place that might be able to place your lab into a home that can take care of her. I would also look into seeing another vet first, not all vets have your or your pets best interest at heart. Try to find a vet that specializes in Labs. Mange is usually caused by mites or food allergies, and labs are known to be sensitive to food allergies.

John

I love my dog..........what to do?

First off, unless you trust your vet implicitly, get a second opinion. There are 2 main forms of mange, one can be treated and one cannot. I am unsure as to why this infection keeps returning (even with her immune system impaired).

Second, see if there are any people that would be willing to help you with the financial part.... if you love the dog, maybe you and the family could do your own fund raiser!! Go to a local dog park and hand out "FREE" doggie treat bags.... but then have a sign that says "DONATIONS EXCEPTED to raise money for VET bill". People will hear your story and often give you $5-10 bucks for a few cents worth of treats.... Same concept as a car wash for fund raising. MAKE sure your doggie goes with you and the kids.... It would be great family time also!

I know you do not want to consider euthanasia, so I will not offer it as an option, you already know it is an option.

I had a black lab, she finally passed when she was 13 years old... WHAT a GREAT dog... her name was Raven... I will miss that dog FOREVER!

Good luck,,, I know it is hard... and one that says "it is JUST a dog"..... has NO idea!!!!!! It is like saying it is "JUST" a child!

I love my dog..........what to do?

Poor dog!!!! Spend the 200 it is probably the best deal. If you don't do it who will. Don't let your dog suffer

I love my dog..........what to do?

Just like any other profession, all vets have different ideas and different treatments they like to do. I would talk with a couple other vets and see what they recommend. Maybe another vet will actually be able to solve your problem. No vet knows it all so talking to other vets just might help you.

I love my dog..........what to do?

Are you sure, about you not being able to purchase the dip, my mom's dog a sheltie named Daisy developed demodex mange after having a tumor and her spleen removed. I dipped her every two weeks and she was fed homemade dog food. We used to order dip through 1-800 pet meds, mind it did have an anesthetic effect. The mange itself was kept in check, can you consult another vet for a second opinion. Daisy was 9 and happily lived another 3 years

I love my dog..........what to do?

Sounds like demodex mange, it is due to a weakened immune system that causes it to return. Yes it is a mite, but is not past from one pet to another. All dogs carry that mite, but most of the time a strong immune system keeps them in check. Most likely the dip your vet is talking about is Mitaban, which is very toxic and should not be used by people that are not trained in the dangers of it. There are other means of treatment for demodex, ask your vet about an Ivermec treatment.

Why has my dog become more aggressive since we moved?

I have a 10 year old Rottweiler (Belle), in my last residence she was very friendly to anyone who came up to her while she was in her fenced in yard, or while she was on her porch and would happily greet them. Since we moved (in October '07), she has become very property aggressive. She doesn't have her own yard at this house, so I walk her twice a day and take her out in her yard many times a day to potty, but when I take her out on the porch just to sunbathe, or relax; it seems she gets very protective of the property. She will lunge at people (I keep her on her leash), and barks very aggressively, even raising the hair on her back.

We are moving again at the end of the month to a new house with an all fenced in yard, and I don't want her running up to the fence and barking at everyone who walks by. She can be such a friendly dog, what made her change? How can I get her back? Any advice is greatly welcome, thanks.

Why has my dog become more aggressive since we moved?

Probably cuz he isb't used to the new house and doesn't like it

Why has my dog become more aggressive since we moved?

They get used to their surroundings and their home when you take them out of what they r familiar with it causes them stress and we all know what stress can lead to.

Why has my dog become more aggressive since we moved?

not enough water dumped on it's head.... j/k, no it could be the moving all over deal, some animals adapt to where there at so much if they leave the enviroment changes to much and they feel like they have no attention from you.

Why has my dog become more aggressive since we moved?

moving can cause stress. dogs naturally respond aggressivly to stress.

Why has my dog become more aggressive since we moved?

It natural dog behavior. When dogs feel like they're out of place, the become aggressive. I suggest you get a trained professional to help with his behavior or you can just wait till he gets used to the place.

Why has my dog become more aggressive since we moved?

Dogs, like humans, stress out sometimes when big changes arise, such as a move. Especially since you have gone from a fenced yard to a residence with no yard. That was a big lifestyle change for your pet, especially with her age. I am sure that moving to the new house with a fenced in yard will help her a lot. Just give her some time to get used to her new place.

Why has my dog become more aggressive since we moved?

She is unsure of her new surroundings. She thinks she has to protect the domain. Perhaps even you, at times. She is not comfortable there. Maybe you need to give it some time. She doesn't understand what we humans take for granted. That this is her new place, and then to move her again, hopefully she will soon be comfortable. Still, you know as we humans know things so do the animals. Perhaps there is an unfamiliar threatening scent there. She may think she needs to protect herself as well or that this new place will soon not be hers again, she is probably insecure about whether or not she will even have a home with all this new turmoil, she can sense things like that, she just doesn't know exactly what. Maybe when you get to the new place you can make a comfy spot with her, give her lots of attention, and calm her down so that she feels at home in the new place. Don't blame the dog, she cannot communicate exactly whats wrong and its entirely up to you as her master and owner to find out just whats wrong. GL and GB

Why has my dog become more aggressive since we moved?

She is nervous because of the change, and not sure what is her territory, and what is not - to her, she's just in a strange place, and trying to be in charge is very hard when you're not sure what to be in charge of...

Your best bet is to take her to obedience class, and get her working mind going again - you need to be in charge of her, so she doesn't feel so exposed. Try and find a trainer who has Rottie's or GSD's or some other serious working dog, not just a suburban Labrador manners class...she needs military school to make her feel more secure.

She should also be crated, for the very same reason - a crate will take the responsibility away from her to guard the premises, and let her relax. Crates are also a good tool to help a dog transition from one property to the next, since the crate will be familiar.

You might also try a Gentle Leader on her, which transfers the authority from her to you - it has a very good instructional video with it that explains the psychological ramifications of having control of her head, but basically it gives her a demotion in the pack, and lets you be in control, which is what she needs.

Why has my dog become more aggressive since we moved?

She's become more aggressive because of the lack of a yard. Your next move should calm her down and smooth her out again, but be prepared for more aggression as she settles in. Do not 'punish' her for being agressive, but distract her with treats so she has something else to think about, and she should be back to her normal friendly self in three months or less.

Why has my dog become more aggressive since we moved?

Sudden changes in behavior usually mean that you should visit a vet. You should find a trainer to help you understand how to change the association your dog has about other people in her new home, if you discover no medical issues causing the problem. Learn about counter conditioning and desensitization. You should also learn about triggers and thresholds. You might read the book MINE!

Why has my dog become more aggressive since we moved?

Being an animal welfare tech, I would think this poor little soul is probaby a little stressed with the move try hard not to be stresed yourself easy said I know but try really hard to de stress yourself and I think you will find the belle will get over the move quicker she sounds stressed and being away from her own inviroment she is worried just sit it out and be close to her she should recover if you need anymore help do not hesitate to email me anytime good luck to you and belle.

Why has my dog become more aggressive since we moved?

Wow thats crazy!! Never heard of anything like it

All I can think of is pulling her up when he shows the aggressive behaviour........make a loud noise to distract her from being aggressive..........when he stops praise her straight away.

Thats only my opinion. But i'm thinking maybe time could just help???

Have NO idea! Good luck.

Has anyone used Janet Collection Yaki hair? Does it matte? Using Urban Beauty....hate it?

I have just started to wear my hair with sewn in weave and I am on my learning journey now. I have had it done twice and learned each time. I had to ask which hair was good and was told by my cousin to use Urban Beauty because she used it and loved it. I have used it twice and it sheds like a dog!! In my office around my desk, looks like I have carpet. It mattes at the back where it lays on my neck and is bunched up there, so when I talk to someone, I don;t know if I am looking okay or if my hair is ****** to one side. I wrap it at night then tie it up, get to work then brush it down, clean the sink and the floor of all the fall out then go to work. Withing 20 minutes, it's a matted mess in the back. I go Saturday to get it done over and was told to try Milky Way or Janet. Milky Way isn't available here in the south so Janet it is.....HELP!!!

Has anyone used Janet Collection Yaki hair? Does it matte? Using Urban Beauty....hate it?

Girl listen I've been wearing weave for a while now and I believe that Janet could work for you. Just as long as you take care of it and don't try to do to much to it. It will last.

Has anyone used Janet Collection Yaki hair? Does it matte? Using Urban Beauty....hate it?

You need to get a new bag of weave. I never wore tracks cause I have long hair down to my bra. If it works for your cousin it doen't nessercyly mean it works for you. That's why beauty supply stores have a variety of weave choices......I don't know if that helped.

Has anyone used Janet Collection Yaki hair? Does it matte? Using Urban Beauty....hate it?

Try Outri. It's really good. There's also this Indian hair you can order online, but it's like $200 a pack. If not Outri, try Femi.

She is my dog, I have had her for 10 years. She weighs 23lbs and she is considered "medium" sized. She has very soft facial hair, but the rest of her coat is slightly wiry and rough. I have been told in the past she is a German Shepared/Collie Mix. What do you think??

I am very interested! :)

What Kind of Dog Is This? (Heinz 57!?)?

She looks like she has some border terrier in her, that would account for the wiry coat and poss border collie. She's a lovely looking dog.

What Kind of Dog Is This? (Heinz 57!?)?

yes she does look like a german shepherd/collie heinz 57 =)

good day!

here is the link to a german shepherd collie mix (looks just like your one):

http://dogs.brilliant4biz.com/kevin-the-...

What Kind of Dog Is This? (Heinz 57!?)?

I'd say maybe a Aussie / Shepard mix

What Kind of Dog Is This? (Heinz 57!?)?

i might even say a terrier mix of some kind - especially given your description of her wiry/rough coat and size (i would expect a shepherd/collie mix to be larger...).

What Kind of Dog Is This? (Heinz 57!?)?

Only 23 #'s, I'd say Shetland sheepdog, pom? She's cute, but those are my guess, I'd not say a German Shepherd, she's only 23 #'s, and plus the face and fur remind me of the Shetland.

What Kind of Dog Is This? (Heinz 57!?)?

I would say German Shepherd/Shetland Sheepdog mix because she is only 23 pounds. If she was a German Shepherd/Collie mix she would be much bigger. And she also has a small face like a sheltie. But she might have other dog breeds mixed in there as well.

http://dogbreedinfo.com/shetlandsheepdog...

What Kind of Dog Is This? (Heinz 57!?)?

Heinz 57 is an old term for a mutt.

If you want to know what mix she is, get DNA testing which is now readily available for dogs.

While she looks a bit GSD, she appears too small to be a simple GSD/collie mix unless one was a mini (small version of the breed)

What Kind of Dog Is This? (Heinz 57!?)?

I think she is a shepherd/sheltie mix

Allergy on our dog?

Our dog has broken out in a allegy rash due to being sprayed with exelpet .It was a honest mistake. We thought it would not harm her by also sprayng the liquid directly onto her coat also spraying her bedding. She has not got any itching but several small areas where she has lost patches of hair.We have been shampooing her with a anteseptic wash since her skin broke out.Can anybody suggests any treatment or remedies for us to treat her with.Otherwise she is a lovely healthy dog.Thanking anyone that answers me.Yes she has been seen by a vet to no avail.

Allergy on our dog?

It was ok to try to wash it off but unfortunately it was already absorbed in her skin. Stop the washing immediately. When skin is irritated washing makes it worse. Call and get a 2nd opinion from another vet. She may need a steroid to take care of it. I wouldn't try anymore topical solutions unless your vet recommends it. Also, when trying something new on a pet follow the directions carefully and also do a very small test patch on her to test for allergies. Best of luck!

Allergy on our dog?

As long as you have removed the offending liquid from the dog's coat and her bedding, she'll heal. Make sure you remove all traces of it from her environment, though. Brush her and don't over shampoo or you'll wash away her natural protective immunity.

Allergy on our dog?

Hello,

The best things you can do are: make sure there are no traces of the chemical around, anywhere. Remove all the stuff you sprayed it on, etc etc. Understand that your pets skin is very sensitive now, and make sure you are very very gentle to it. Having chemicals absorbed on her skin will also cause them to get into her blood stream, so you need to try to get her to eat and drink as much as possible to try to flush the chemicals out of her body. Raw hide bones and dry bones and things like that will definitely be tastey to her, and she'll probably go for them so long as she still has an appetite. Dry bones will also make her thirsty, so she'll drink after that. You'll just have to wait for her to get over it, I'm pretty sure that if it were going to cause her to die, it would have done so by now, but I'd take every precaution possible.

Allergy on our dog?

I dont think there is anything you can do other than let the dog recover over time. Don't wash her too much with the antiseptic, as she doesn't have a bacterial infection but an allergy. The antiseptic could irritate her skin even more. You might ask your vet for an anti inflammatory cream which is more soothing, See that she always has plenty of water to drink.

Allergy on our dog?

move out for a while til you feel better or get rid of the dog.

Allergy on our dog?

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

i recnetly took in a stray dog for a couple of nights as it had been roaming around for days. Unfortunately i cannot keep it as i have children who are allergic to the hair. I heard that if you take them to the pound they are put down after a week. Where can i take this dog without danger of the above??

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

http://www.petfinder.com/pet.cgi?action=...

Click on the drop down menu and click on your state and press GO.

There will be a list of shelters in your state and just try to find one near you. Sometimes it will say "no kill" but if not just call up and ask if they are. Is the dog friendly? If it is, they will probably take it and wash it up and put it in a foster home. If it is aggressive in anyway they will most likely put it down (even no kill shelters).

You can also take it to the local shelter and ask how long it can stay before it will get put down. Then call shelters/breed specific rescues (if you can figure out the breed). That way your kids wont be affected by the hair and the dog is safe and getting a meal. Hopefully you can find one and go back to the shelter and pick him up to take into their rescue.

Hope this helps and you find something that works!

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

Your local pound

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

Check around locally for a no kill shelter.

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

Find a 'no kill' shelter in your area.

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

post information and a pic on petfinder.com

Please dont take him to the pound, they will put him to sleep!!!

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

you need to look for no kill shelters or you can call the city to come take the dog away. if the owner had a chip put it they will find it and return the dog. but its not your dog and not your responsibility.

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

Take it to your local Chinese restaurant. They have special places for them. (right next to your fried rice)

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

You can either place it on ads to find a owner that would want it for free. That should work out okay!

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

Battersea dogs home..... I am not sure where you live - but it may be reported lost - look here http://www.dogshome.org/reunite/lost_dog...

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

There are organizations that don't put them down. My sister works for one in MI. It is called the Michigan Anti-Cruelty Society. If you live in another state or country you might do a search for one of these!

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

i dont no bout where you live, but where i from they dont put a healthy dog to sleep, unless its a biter or has an untreatable illness.

call the RSPCA or the dogs trust, they will tell you the nearest place to take it.

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

" take him to the nearest animal shelter. Or, if you plan to keep the animal in the event no owner is found, notify animal control that you have the animal or that you have taken him to a veterinary hospital for treatment. "

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

rspca, just phone them and they will come and take it. they aint put down after a week, they keep the dog and try to rehome them for 6 months then put it down!

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

Take the dog to the pound. I know that it is not easy, but he has more chances of being adopted.

If you are afraid of the dog being Euthanized. Get the dog updated on his shots and have him shaved down at the groomers. That's the last option.

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

I would advertise in the local paper what you have just said here.

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

take it to your local police station and they can check if the dog is micro-chipped etc and will either contact owners or forward the dog onto relevant people eg cat and dog home

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

try the blue cross if you are in the uk they rehome cats and dogs ,also contact your local vetinary surgery they should put you intouch with someone, also check out the rspca you should find them in the phone book or,online at yell.com

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

Take it to your local Humane Society, not the pound...they will put to sleep. The HS will keep it as long as it lives. Someone can adopt it as well.

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

take it to dogs home they wont put it down honest they will find a homefor it my two came from a home and one had been in there 6 months

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

If you are worried that they may be put down if not claimed or adopted, I'd try to find a local "no kill" shelter. We have several of those in our area.

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

the rspca will try and sell it they have a website, www.rspca.co.uk

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

put up signs and foster the dog as long as you can, keep it away from the children though. put ads in newspapers as well, someone's bound to come for it soon enough.

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

If you turn the dog in to animal control they are generally only required (by law) to hold the dog for 7 days. After this the dog will probably be put to sleep. Sometimes they give them more time if they have the space or if they have a director who is very motivated to adopt out animals rather than euthanize them. Some animal control facilities are very strict about destroying dogs after their required hold time to help control the spread of disease (there was a case in Nevada where the shelter was allowed to become over crowded out of a desire to help the animals and disease became a HUGE problem).

Can you first take it to a vet and have it scanned for a microchip? I would think that if you called and explained they would allow you to bring the dog in to be scanned without charging you. Have you tried to locate the dog's family or do you think it was dumped? Did it look well cared for at all? Does it have a discernible breed? If it does, you may have a good chance of finding help from a breed specific rescue. There are also all breed and mutt rescues out there as well. Sometimes they need a little time to find a foster home for the dog, so if you have a garage that doesn't get too hot or too cold, maybe you could continue to house the dog temporarily.

I don't know where you are located, but petfinder.com lists rescues and shelters by state and town. Don't be afraid to contact a rescue because it is too far away. Transports can be arranged if they are willing to take the dog in.

ETA: If you end up having to resort to taking the dog to the pound (you DO have to think about your children's health) please ask what their practices are on selling surplus animals for research. I know that there is an animal control facility near me that requires a payment from you if you don't want that to happen to the dog. Then they just put it down at the end of it's stay.

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

call the local dog catcher or humane society

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

a local no-kill shelter!

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

Take it to a Rescue Shelter.

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

First and foremost do not take the dog to an animal shelter. Like you said...they do put them down after so long of being there. I would call a local vet and find some numbers to an animal rescue facility or an no-kill shelter. It is likely that if this is a dog over a couple years of age they do not adopt out in an animal shelter as easily. Most shelters put the dogs down inhumanly as well in a gas chamber that suffocates them to death. You wouldn't want that on your mind now would you.

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

You must take it to the pound I'm afraid.

At the moment that dog still has a legal owner who can take him back at any time (Would you prefer the dog went back to a "home" where he was turfed out?)

The pound must keep the dog for a week to give its owner a chance to reclaim the dog. The owner will have no further claim on that dog once the week is up.

If the dog is not claimed during that week it will have a chance at being taken in by a rescue and being found a loving home.

Alternatively, maybe you could go back to the pound after 6 days and if the dog is still there, you could ask to take it on, short term until a new home can be found. That depends of course on how bad your childrens' allergies are and whether you are willing to risk that.

If you do go down that route, take advice from local rescue centres as to the best way to rehome the dog. You don't want the dog to end up with owners that aren't capable of providing for the dog.

Maybe you could even ask if they would be able to take the dog in. Although they may well be unable to, due to the number of dogs that are already in need of rescue, it might be worth a try.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx...

P.S. I'm not an expert, but I'm about 90% certain that the above is valid in the UK.

If you are in the UK, try asking somebody at a local rescue:

http://www.dogpages.org.uk/

Click on the part of the map closest to where you live and there will be a list of rescues near you.

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

You need to get the dog checked for a tattoo or microchip first by a vet or shelter or dog warden as it could have a home with owners who are missing it. if no luck then ask around and find a shelter with a no kill policy.

Where can i take a stray dog that i have found?

Can anyone recommend a good dog food for dogs with food allergies?

I have two dogs, a maltese %26amp; cockerspaniel. The cocker got agressive from sevear ear infections, to calm him down he was neutered had a tonsilectomy %26amp; 2 ear scopes, antibiotic drops, oral meds. an allergy shot every 6 weeks and I have also been using a home made remedy made from vinegar, alchol and borac acid. Now non agressive dog, Better but still some problem with ears. Changed their food to Royal Canin 30 small bites. They loved it. Beautiful hair, the eye staining from tearing is gone! After eating it for 2 months the maltese started turning red around her hind-end and on her back legs, she started biting these areas until they were raw. I was told she was having problems with corn gluton in the food. Natural balance duck and potatoe formula was recommened. Been giving them this for 2weeks. They would not eat it at first so I had to mix the dry with can. They eat it but not very well. This is very expensive %26amp; It does not come in small bites, would another royal canin work?

Can anyone recommend a good dog food for dogs with food allergies?

My maltese did that butt/tail chewing thing off and on for 15years. There was no reason that I could see. A lot of the time I think it was nerves. Has anything changed in your household to make her/him feel upset. I know it sounds silly, but little dogs as well as big can be greatly affected by changes in their enviroment. Have you tried just giving the dog a half a benadryl. This works wonders on dog allergies and doesn't cost as much as essentially the same drug the vet would give. Best of luck.

I also always recommend Nutro dog food.

Can anyone recommend a good dog food for dogs with food allergies?

as a matter of fact the same day i bought the duck and potatoe food I had the groomer expel her anal glands! this had not been done in a while. There were also times the skin on her back and stomach seemed more red or a brighter pink than usual. is this common? Report It

Can anyone recommend a good dog food for dogs with food allergies?

nutro natural choice is a good dog food

Can anyone recommend a good dog food for dogs with food allergies?

These are also expensive foods but they are all natural foods that are of excellant quality.

canidae, solid gold, california natural, wellness, dick van pattens formula, and my favorite innova evo.

there are many on the market that are good. your local petstore is a good place to start.

Can anyone recommend a good dog food for dogs with food allergies?

Make your own. That way you will avoid the additives and fillers found in most commercial dog foods - and the problems that go with them.

Can anyone recommend a good dog food for dogs with food allergies?

I sympathize with you. I'd try Avo-Derm, it's made with avocado and is for dogs with skin issues, but may work for your dog. I'm familiar with the Royal Canin brand but haven't used it on my dogs (I have a cockapoo, a Border Collie/Husky, and a Shar-Pei/Boxer). Are you 100% sure that the Maltese is just not having a problem with impacted anal glands?

P.S. My friend spent OVER $1,000 at the dog allergist..........and figured out ON HER OWN that the dog was allergic to the lawn fertilizer........... after feeding the dog tofu and boiled potatoes, rice, etc......... try to think of ANYTHING that you are using different besides food, like new detergent to wash the dog's bedding, or new shampoo, etc, other than food............ just trying to save you a bit of money.

Can anyone recommend a good dog food for dogs with food allergies?

the only thing u should give the dog DOG FOOD ONLY for 2 weeks, trust me this hapend 2 my puppy 2.then,the next week, what ever u have been feedig him or her, give them that.the allergy should be comin back.if you did not give it any human food then u should take it to the vetenery.

Can anyone recommend a good dog food for dogs with food allergies?

My allergy dog - a lab is on Royal Canin Venison and Potato. It took about 2 months before her ears cleared up but they did. Now she's off all of her allergy meds (100mg hydrox 2x per day) along with ear meds off and on and Cephelexin for various infections. She's healthy and normal now.

The main thing is, she can't have anything else. No treats, nothing. The only treat she gets is a bit of her food. The vet says I can give her marshmallows but we haven't done that yet.

Also - beware of your heartworm treatment. We had to switch her to Revolution from Heartguard because HG was beef based....

This food does work. You just have to stick with it.

Can anyone recommend a good dog food for dogs with food allergies?

You can still use Royal Canin, Or can try Science Diet, Cadines,Barf Diet. If still worry go consult Vet

Can anyone recommend a good dog food for dogs with food allergies?

i think royal canin is even more expensive than natural balance, isn't it? the duck and potato is very good for allergies. try adding a bit of water to it instead of the canned stuff if you're concerned about the expense--it can really add up!

Can anyone recommend a good dog food for dogs with food allergies?

With dogs who have allergies you want to be very careful about what you switch them to, as you've noticed. I'm assuming since you're doing allergy shots, you've done some type of allergy testing. If you're doing steroid shots, that's a different matter and is only treating the histamine/swelling reaction of the allergies, not the allergy itself. If you're doing true allergy shots, check the allergy lists to make sure that you're not feeding anything that your dog is allergic to. After you've done that, you want to look at the foods you've been feeding to see what the main carbohydrate and protein sources are. If your dogs have had allergic reactions to the food, you need to find both a new carb and a new protein. There are hundreds of combinations to try, but you need to be vigilant and keep records of what you've already fed and how your dogs reacted to it. It usually takes 4 to 6 months for long term allergies to show up, and often food allergies can show up that long after a single exposure to a allergen. That being said, I would recommend sticking with the current food for at least 2 to 3 months. The Natural Balance foods are good quality foods, and they have a variety of options to find one that your dogs will eat. Best of luck with this process, it can be long, difficult and expensive, especially when your dog has such serious reactions, and aggression associated with allergies.

Can anyone recommend a good dog food for dogs with food allergies?

i would recommend nutro natural choice cuz its organic, and helps dry skin and flaky skin.and if you do decide to change their food make sure you mix it properly so they dont get stomach problems.

Can anyone recommend a good dog food for dogs with food allergies?

I suggest you visit http://www.dogsvets.net and consult a Vet or breed expert for free

Can anyone recommend a good dog food for dogs with food allergies?

A problem with Royal Canin foods is that they often contain wheat and corn, sometimes soy, and often beef. These are BIG BIG BIG allergens in dogs. So, avoid Royal Canin foods, it's better that way.

Avoid Nutro foods as well. They sometimes contain wheat. MAX uses corn gluten and wheat products.

Blue Buffalo has a Fish and Sweet Potato formula that would be good for a dog with allergies. Blue Buffalo is found at Petsmart. They dont use corn, wheat, soy, no by-products, no artificial anythings.

Wellness has what they call Simple Solutions, which are made for dogs with allergies. It is one protein and one carbohydrate. You can find in with duck and rice, or venison and rice. Wellness is a really good food and comes highly recommended, I have found.

Merrick has a Wilderness Blend, which is Buffalo, Venison and Salmon with varied grains like oatmeal and rice. This food you can add warm water to and it makes it's own [thick] gravy. The bites are pretty small. The food is an all-life stages for all sizes food. Meaning, any dog, regardless of age or size can eat the food. It is a VERY good food.

You could do an allergy panel on the dog to find out everything the dog is allergic to. If you are unsure about what your vet tells you, you could see a hollistic vet and they will be more likely to give you answers you could use.

Having a LOT of trouble following you here.

Please i need help for my dog its urgent?

doggie vitamins. look up another vet online from another place and call them an see what they say. they also have things to make the hair grow back and they have a fungus shampoo out there that might help her skin an coat. get to a feed an tack store or petstore an they might b able to help more than us. we are not professionals. that is something a pro would have to help you with if you do the wrong thing bc somebody didn;t know what they were talking about could hurt her dramatically

Please i need help for my dog its urgent?

she might have a chance to save her but that would mean traveling to the US and going to Colorado its the best animal hospital you can go to...

Please i need help for my dog its urgent?

If this is for real, you need to get that dog to the vet and pay for treatments. If you don't trust the vet you mother chose then find one yourself. And report what happened to your local animal control. Assuming you are not some kind of troll and what you've said is the truth, this treatment might be illegal even in the Phillipines.

Please i need help for my dog its urgent?

Try feeding him COOKED chicken breast and pour the broth over some dry dog food.

Please i need help for my dog its urgent?

If the dog isn't eating the raw meat, switch to a blander diet. Give the dog cooked meat/chicken/whatever without spices and bread or some kind of grain to go with it (even though wild dogs don't eat grain, this is a big part of a pet's diet). This should be easier to eat than raw meat or table scraps. I hope this works for you. Also, keep an eye on how much water the dog drinks. I'm not sure we are getting the whole picture, but nothing you have mentioned makes me think it is time to put the dog down. But we can't see the dog--be honest with yourself about how she's doing.

If the dog is suffering, sooner or later you have to decide to give up hope and decide she would be better off dead than alive and in that much pain. If this happens, you can have the vet put her to sleep or do it yourself, but either way, be there with your dog at the end. It's the hardest part about having a great dog--sooner or later, you have to say goodbye. Don't let your mom take care of that for you, and if you are leaving town again, make that clear with her.

Please i need help for my dog its urgent?

So sorry to hear about your German Shepherd. You say she is improving which has to be a good sign so do not allow your Mom to have her put to sleep. Maxine deserves the chance to recover. If she has a problem with her immune system then do not feed her raw meat as this will be too much for her body to deal with and will stress her immune system even more. Try feeding her with lightly cooked meat and give her vegetables so that she gets more vitamins and minerals from her food to help her build up strength and improve her health. Finally, German Shepherds bond with their owners and she will pick up your anxieties - this will stress her immune system also. Try to remain calm and you will be more able to do your best for Maxine. Good luck - she has good chances of recovery.

Dog sore? anyone know what it could be?

my dog has some sores on the back of his neck, about the size of a pound coin, they look sore and brown, iv have wiped them with water to get a better look but the hair is all matted around them, could they be ticks?

thanks

Dog sore? anyone know what it could be?

Take the dog to a vet. What ever it is it needs treated...

Dog sore? anyone know what it could be?

I hope it is not mange. Have him checked

Dog sore? anyone know what it could be?

maybe he could have just scratched it while looking through a hole in a fence etc. But nevertheless it's always best to get a second opinion if you are not sure or concerned.

Try the PDSA it is free after all

Dog sore? anyone know what it could be?

I believe your seeing a Hot Spot. It can get nasty and needs to be kept clean. Neosporan help to heal it.

Cause may be from dirt or sand in the hair roots. If it looks bad, seek medical attention.

Best of luck

Dog sore? anyone know what it could be?

Give your dog a nice warm water bath with dettol in the water and use the shampoo that you use for urself. Your dogs coat with be nice and soft and the dog will feel much healthier and active and better and wont get any sores.

Dog sore? anyone know what it could be?

You need to get some liquid antibacterial soap and make a good suds and soak the area until you can pull all that matted hair from am around these areas. After the hair is removed dry the area well and put some gold bond powder on it. If you don't see an improvement in a couple days see you Vet.

Dog sore? anyone know what it could be?

If in doubt go to the vets. If they are ticks then it is best to get the vet to remove them. It doesn't cost that much so if I were you I would book him in ASAP

Dog sore? anyone know what it could be?

No one can possibly diagnose what is wrong with your dog here. Take him to the vet, whatever it is, it needs to be treated sooner rather than later before it gets worse. It could be anything, eczema, flea allergy or any number of other things - doesn't sound like ticks though.

Dog sore? anyone know what it could be?

get your dog checked out by the vet

Dog sore? anyone know what it could be?

There are a number of reasons which could explain why your dog has sores. As well as hot spots, mange, fleas or ticks he could have an allergy or an underlying health problem.

The best advice I can give is to take him to the vet who will check him over and give a professional opinion.

Trying to attend to his sores yourself could cause more problems in the long run.

Dog sore? anyone know what it could be?

get your dog checked by your vet could be an allergy

Dog sore? anyone know what it could be?

I am most alarmed having read some of the answers, do not use detol its not meant for dogs and dont use human shampoo or antibacterial soap the best thing is plain boiled water cooled with some salt about a large teaspoon per pint of water, gently clean the area with the solution and cotton wool if its weeping ie leaking clear fluid and wont dry up even after several bathings with the solution go to the vets it doesnt sound like ticks unless its an area thats got infected, keep it clean and dry, leave the collar off and try to stop the dog scratching it.

Dog sore? anyone know what it could be?

yes and most likely they are ticks to remove a tick you must get the head of the tick out they carry infectious diseases and if you dont the the dog could very possibly die.

Dog is covered with grease?

The mowers left a large pile of grease in our yard and our dog rolled in it and is covered with grease. We've gotten a lot of the grease out with dish soap and some scissors, but he's still got a lot of grease on his face. His hair is of medium length and is very, very dense and I'd really like to get him clean and save him and ourselves from the oil stench.

Dog is covered with grease?

Dawn dish soap is the best thing, but you do need to take care around his face. It can take several washings to get it out. Rubbing corn starch or baby powder on his fur, then washing with dish soap, may help.

Dog is covered with grease?

First shampoo: Dawn dish soap.

Second shampoo: A really good dog shampoo.

Dog is covered with grease?

You might want to call a groomer for profetional help it's the best thing you can do right now.

Dog is covered with grease?

I have two suggestions the best thing to use is Dawn dish detergent this is what wildlife rehabers use with oil spills.

YO(u really need to work it in and let it set for a few minutes to cut through the grease the other is get clippers and shave off all the hair and then bath.

After bathing use an inch of Downy fabric softner as a conditioner. This is what we were taught in grroming to use as a conditioner, YOu can pick your sent and you can use this anytime you bathe her

Good Luck.

Dog is covered with grease?

just keep washing him if it doesnt work u might want to shave him.

Dog is covered with grease?

Go with the dawn as suggested. Keep away from eyes and ears, use a face cloth for those areas. Ad keep the dog from licking and digesting it. maybe one of those crazy saucer collors.

Dog is covered with grease?

Yep...wildlife rehab specialist always use dawn to remove that stuff. I don't know if that foaming dawn would work better????? Might be worth a shot. Just make sure you don't get any of that stuff (reg. or foaming) in his eyes of course (sure u already know that lol).

Dog is covered with grease?

Baby Shampoo and a wash cloth will work good.

Dog is covered with grease?

Dawn is great, but if it is really bad try some corn oil or peanut butter. They both remove paint and oil safely. Rub it into the hair and towel off as much as you can. Then use the Dawn.

Dog is covered with grease?

i am a dog groomer, go to petco or a petsmart and look for degreaser shampoo and soak your dog about 15-20 minutes let the shampoo stand.

Dog is covered with grease?

Use Dawn dishwashing liquid, that will cut the grease so you can get it out and rinse it off.

What type of dog should I get?

I was thinking an Italian Greyhound, a Miniature Pinscher, or a Daschund, for an idea. I want a small dog, not one of those that you carry around all over the place, but you can still pick up. Short hair is preferred. I like the look of the streamlined head of the Greyhound and the Pinscher. Like a mini hell hound.

What type of dog should I get?

Consider the needs of the breeds you are interested in. The IG may not be the best choice if you are in an apartment - only advising this as several breeders told me that the balcony could pose a hazard if they were to try to jump over it.

Min pins can be noisy and bosy. Barking may not be the best thing in an apartment.

I love dachshunds! I have worked with them, and the only thing I can think of at the moment is stairs (if they are prone to back problems, especially as they age, stairs could be an issue).

Why not try finding breeders online, and asking them if they feel that their breed would suit your lifestyle. You need to consider many things: how often you are home, can your dog run around outside everyday, do you have stairs or an elevator, how quiet is your building, are there children in the building, do you have a lot of company over, do you sleep in late, stay out late, party a lot, etc. Go over these things with a breeder and get their opinion. Keep in mind that they are biased of course, but most only want the best possible home for their pets.

Good luck!

What type of dog should I get?

why dont YOU do research,,,you know your life style..

What type of dog should I get?

why not try a Boston Terrier or a Jack russel terrier. Both are great lil dogs and they are very loyal and energetic.

What type of dog should I get?

try a schnauzer.

What type of dog should I get?

What type of dog should I get?

What type of dog should I get?

What type of dog should I get?

I think You should get a beagle puppie. They are Sooooo cute and they don't get very big either. Whatever dog you choose I hope you have good luck raising him/her. Love Ya!!!

What type of dog should I get?

Hi, I'm a veterinary technician and I just wanted to give you a quick heads up about Jack Russel Terriers, they are not very good apartment dogs. Many Jacks wind up in rescue organizations because people think they are the perfect apartment dog. Don't let their small size fool you, they require a ton of activity and they like to have space. I think any of the dogs you mentioned would be great choices. I hope that helps a little.

What type of dog should I get?

A toy chihuahua with a smooth coat are very low maintenance pet. Plus, their very loyal too. But, take your time finding your perfect dog for your lifestyle.

Check out your local animal shelter too.

What type of dog should I get?

It depends on your lifestyle, look at what breed would suit it. Look to the reason the breed was brought into existence to predict what characteristics it will have. Daschunds were used to hunt burrowing animals. You have to keep their claws clipped, they were designed to dig %26amp; many are indeed diggers.....you yard, your couch, whatever.

Greyhounds are an exception. An old racer will not want to run anymore, they're pretty much run out.

As an example, Dalmations love to run, you would have a hard time keeping one in a city yard. The breed was developed to run under carriages. Dogs have always loved to chace vehicles driving by. That was the same when they were drawn by horses. The Dalmation would protect the horses of his carriage, that's why they're firehouse dogs. Fire ingines were drawn by horses, so there was a Dalmation at every fire house, to protect the horses on the way to a fire. They had ot be runners!

I have a Wiemereiner. They were bred to hunt large game in Germany. They are extremely protective of their masters. Mine won't let any man or large dog near me w/out giving him a strong warning %26amp; watching him the entire time. Good dog to have as I travel alone in my motorhome. But, they don't do well being left alone for long periods of time. We call them a Velcro dog, because they will stick as close as possible to their owner. You wouldn't want a dog like that if you work long hours.

So, for the breeds that you are considering.... look at what the breed was developed for. What charactictics would make the dog good for that purpose? Don't just look at coloring! many people get Wiemies because of their cool coloring, then dump them after they just get too much to handle. Don't get a digger if you're not going to be around. Bored diggers.... dig. Terriors tend to be very smart. A bored, smart dog is a distructive dog!

What type of dog should I get?

Get the breed that you want! That you're comfortable with, do you want a high energy dog, or low energy dog? Or do you want high maintace dog?

Go here http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/dogbree...

What type of dog should I get?

I love the min pins. great little dogs but they are barkers. i have a miniature dachshund she is the love of my life she goes to work with me every day. i work for a vet. both of these dogs would be great the Italian Greyhounds are a little fragile. and both the doxie and min pins can be biters.

What type of dog should I get?

A maltese or a Dauchsund.

What type of dog should I get?

Pit

What type of dog should I get?

I own and breed American Pit Bull Terriers. The standard for the Pit Bull (female) is only 45 to 55 lbs. They are not a fatty type dog and are short hair. They are very good in agility and weight pull comps. They have alot of energy so that would need to taken into concideration on your part. Here take a look here- http://www.freewebs.com/hometownkennel/ There is information as well as other links for you to take a look at and do some research. :)

What type of dog should I get?

chihwowa ,yorkie, pickneese,shih tzu

What type of dog should I get?

you should get a boston terrier. they are small, and short haired. and have great personalitys

What type of dog should I get?

Best breed of dog to have (read specifics please)?

So i'm looking to get a dog. I was thinking of beagle, but thats out of the question - escape artists.

What i want:

~Good around small kids, and fairly large groups (50 people)

~Active -Can run and do stuff like fetch etc

~Can be calm, sleep normally etc =P

~Can stay alone (i suppose this depends on training)

~Not extremely tiny (no chihuahua)

~Not extremely big (great dane etc.)

~Shouldnt shed too much hair - should stay there and be clipped when needed

~Not violent, except when injured (i.e if someone punches him he should bite them, but i suppose this is also training)

~Strength can be anything, doesn't matter.

I was thinking cocker-spaniel, but again im not sure.

Thanks

p.s best answer will go to someone who gives the most options and opinions relating to the specifics and things, not just one answer

Best breed of dog to have (read specifics please)?

you kidding. Cocker Spaniels have bad temperaments and are not good around a lot of people. I have 3 friends that have CS and they are bitches, they hate my kids. My neighbor has one and bit his 2 year old in the face. My best friend has one and bit her husband in the nose and our other friend in the lip.

===Schnauzer!====

Doesn't Shed

Does need Grooming

Friendly with kids

Small and manageable

Not food aggressive

Highly intelligent

We have two males neutered. My kids 4 and 8 wrestle with them snatch toys from them. Pull on their legs and they just lay there and lick them.

But then again any breed you get is really all about how you train them. The best dogs are MUTS they don't have any genetic imperfections due to inbreeding like full breeds.

Best breed of dog to have (read specifics please)?

Cocker Spaniels have a lot of hair, and they shed. Lots of grooming required.

Best breed of dog to have (read specifics please)?

I htink that your best option would be a lab. Labs are very family friendly (although as puppies they are really stupid not being mean luv them) but they are great around people including small kids. I do have a long haired chihuahua she loves people (vet tells me she is just weird for her breed) but she does not like crowds. Still she is a great dog.

Best breed of dog to have (read specifics please)?

I think that the best kind of breed that would suit you is a standard poodle. They LOVE kids and people, and they love to go outside and play. When inside, usually sleep or just lay and chew on a bone or squeky toy. Good size. Don't shed at all. Are not violent, but good for protection. Pretty strong. We have one, and we will always have one in the house.

Best breed of dog to have (read specifics please)?

blue heelers are awesome dogs. my grandparents have on and she is loving playful and gentle. however, if hurt, threatened or trying to protect the owner, they can be viscous according to the trainer they sent her to.

Best breed of dog to have (read specifics please)?

Golder retrievers are great because they can be very active but they also settle very quickly. They are great with kids and large groups. They do shed though. You could also consider a lab, they have very similar personalities to Golden's but they are a bit more active. With proper training, both breeds would fit your description well. Standard poodles don't shed, but they are very active for about the first 5 years of life. Rottweilers are also really good breeds. They can be trained very easily but they can also be very active. Most small breeds are not a good choice. They tend to be a bit temperamental. You will also want to stay away from the terrier group. Stick with breeds from the sporting and working groups.

Hope this helps, and good luck!!!

Best breed of dog to have (read specifics please)?

mini daschund (weenie dog) because they're not too small, so so cute, healthy and they still alert you if things arent right

Best breed of dog to have (read specifics please)?

I think you are almost over-thinking this. There are a lot of dogs that would fit the bill, but it is based a lot on temperament and training, not necessarily breed. Where do mixed breeds fit in to your equation?

Try going to your local shelter. Give them your concerns, and see if they can't fix you up with a great dog.

Best breed of dog to have (read specifics please)?

I really like Olde English bulldogges. They are wonderful with children. They like to sleep but they can be active and playful when you want them to be. I have a 5 year old male Olde English bulldogge and he can stay by home by himself (and sleep). They do not shed much and they don't need very much grooming. Just a bath about 1-2 times a month. They are strong dogs.

You can find the standard for them at

Shelter mutts!

Every size, shape, mix, breed, color, EVERYTHING you could possibly want is in a shelter just dying to meet you.

Shelter dogs are temperment tested, inexpensive and come with lots of "extras".

You save a life too.

Best breed of dog to have (read specifics please)?

i would say get a mixed breed. no one ever adopts muts and they need a home too. my dog is 2 years old and is a boxer/lab/??? and we love her. she's very friendly and loves all people.

Best breed of dog to have (read specifics please)?

Labs make great family pets but they shed like crazy. Golden Retrievers are also nice family dogs but shed like crazy.

Your other concerns have more to do with training.

Best breed of dog to have (read specifics please)?

lab or golden personally i have an irish terrier which fits your whole description but some people need calmer dogs although mine is very calm usually

Best breed of dog to have (read specifics please)?

poodle or rottweiler

The Poodle is a breed of dog. Toy, miniature, and standard poodles are distinguished by adult shoulder height. Poodles come in many colors including black, blue/charcoal, white, red, apricot, silver, and brown. They also appear in parti-color, or multi-colors. While the multi-color poodles cannot be shown in the American Kennel Club (AKC), Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) or any F鑼卍鑼卹ation Cynologique Internationale (FCI) conformation ring, they can be shown in the United Kennel Club (UKC) show ring and in all performance rings.

The FCI lists the country of origin as France; although some experts believe poodles may have originated in Russia or Iberia. However, it is commonly agreed that the French are responsible for developing the modern breed into its current three sizes: standard, miniature, and toy. Poodles have been popular all through Europe for several hundred years, and poodle-like dogs are found depicted on Roman sculptures.[1]

Poodles are retrievers; or gun dogs, and can still be seen in that role. The show clips evolved from working clips, which originally provided warmth to major joints when the dogs were immersed in cold water. The rest of the body is shaved for less drag in the water. Poodles are skilled at most other dog events including agility, obedience, tracking, and even herding.

They are elegant in the show ring, having taken top honors in many shows. The poodle coat is dense and generally does not shed. As a result, the coats in showing condition require extensive care and grooming. Most pet poodle owners keep their poodles in much simpler cuts that are easier to care for and require less grooming.

The name poodle comes from the German word Pudel, which is short for Pudelhund, which means "splashing dog". This reflects the breed's use as a water dog (the word Pudel is related to the English word puddle).

Toy weight: 6-9 pounds (3-4 kg.)

Toy height: Up to 10 inches (25.4 cm.)

Miniature weight: 15-17 pounds (7-8 kg.)

Miniature height: 11-15 inches (28-38 cm.)

Standard weight: 45-70 pounds (20-32kg.)

Standard height: 15 (38cm) or more

Coat: Profuse, wiry curly coat (well groomed and clipped)

Activity level: Medium

Learning rate: Extraordinarily high

Temperament of toy and miniature poodle: Sensitive, remarkably intelligent, highly responsive, pleasant, happy, perky, lively, demanding, delightful, amusing, clever; some bloodlines may be high-strung and timid.

Temperament of standard poodle: Proud, elegant, dignified, good-natured, highly intelligent, very trainable, pleasant, happy, sensitive, friendly.

Guard dog ability: Low

Watch-dog ability: Very high

Litter size: 4-7

Life span: 12-15 years

Most poodles are proportionally long-legged dogs. They have dense, curly, non-shedding fur that grows year-round and requires regular grooming. Most are solid-colored, and many registries only allow solid colors in conformation shows. "Parti" (short for parti-colored) poodles have large patches of colors. "Phantom" poodles have the color pattern of a black-and-tan dog, although not necessarily black and tan. Solid-colored poodles may either "hold" their color (i.e., stay more or less the same color throughout their lives) or "fade" or "clear" to a lighter shade. Usually, the ears and the thicker guard hairs hold more of the original color than other fur.

The tail is usually docked in the US, less often in Europe. These days, tails, when docked, are left much longer than in times past. "Bunny like tails" (very short-docked tails) are now rarely seen except among puppy millers.

Unlike many breeds, poodles come in a variety of sizes, distinguished by shoulder height. Standard poodles are 38 cm. (15 in.) and over; miniature poodles are 28 cm. (11 in.) to 38 cm. (15 in.); toys are under 28 cm. (11 in.). These heights are established by all the kennel clubs in accord. "Teacup" poodles have also been bred which are very small; however, they are not recognized as a distinct standard by any of the kennel clubs.

Poodle hair sheds little or not at all, and ranges in texture from coarse and wooly, to soft and wavy. Poodle show clips require many hours of brushing and care per week, about 10 hours/week for a standard poodle. Poodles are usually clipped down as soon as their show career is over and put into a lower-maintenance cut. Pet clips are much less elaborate than show clips and require much less maintenance.

[edit] Show clips

Many breed registries allow only certain clips for poodles shown in conformation. In American Kennel Club (AKC) shows, adults must be shown in the "continental" or "English saddle" clips. Dogs under 12 months old may be shown with a "puppy clip". A handful of registries, such as the United Kennel Club, allow simpler clips.

[edit] Puppy clip

In the puppy clip, the face, throat, base of the tail and feet are shaved. The coat may be shaped with scissors for neatness. Although this clip appears simpler than the other clips, the length of the hair makes it as difficult (maybe more so) to maintain as the adult clips.

[edit] Continental clip

In the continental clip the face, throat, feet and part of the tail are shaved. The upper half of the front legs is shaved, leaving "pompoms" around the ankles. The hindquarters are shaved except for pompoms on the lower leg (from the hock to the base of the foot) and optional round areas (sometimes called "rosettes") over the hips. The continental clip is the most popular show clip today

Poodles are intelligent, alert, and active. Historically, their aptitude has made them ideal for performing in circuses across the globe for centuries. Otherwise notable is this breed's keen sense for instinctual behavior. In particular, marking and hunting drives are more readily observable than in most other breeds. Even Toys will point birds. Classified as highly energetic, poodles can also get bored fairly easily and have been known to get creative about finding mischief.

Poodles are extremely people-oriented dogs and, therefore, are eager to please. They are excellent watchdogs, but unlike some working breeds, don't usually become "one-person" dogs when they are part of a family. Standard Poodles in particular tend to be good with children. Poodles are adaptable and easy to train. Like most dogs, they appreciate daily exercise, such as a walk or a play session. Most are fairly agile and athletic.

The most common serious health issues of standard poodles (listed in order of the number of reported cases in the Poodle Health Registry (as of August 20, 2007) are Addison's disease, gastric dilatation volvulus (GDV = bloat/torsion), thyroid issues (hyperthyroid and hypothyroid), epilepsy, sebaceous adenitis, juvenile renal disease, hip dysplasia, and cancer. Standard poodles are also susceptible to some health issues usually too minor to report to the poodle health registry. The most common of these minor issues are probably ear infections. Ear infections are a problem in all poodle varieties. Ear problems can be minimized by proper ear care. A veterinarian should be consulted if the dog shows signs of an ear infection, lest a minor issue turn into a major issue

A Rottweiler is a large dog breed originating in Germany as herding dogs for their livestock. The early Rottweilers also worked as beasts of burden, carrying wood and other products to market. In addition, they were used as draft animals to pull carts filled with various products for their owners. During the first and second World Wars, Rottweilers were put into service as war time guard dogs. Currently they are frequently used as guard and police dogs. A Rottweiler which has been properly trained will be as gentle as any other breed of dog, though some have trained them to be hostile. The breed is almost always black with clearly defined tan or mahogany markings on the cheeks, muzzle, chest, legs, and eyebrows. The coat is medium length and consists of a waterproof undercoat and a coarse top coat. Rottweiler coats tend to be low maintenance, although they experience shedding during certain periods of the year. The skull is typically massive, but without excessive jowls. The forehead may be wrinkly when the Rottweiler is alert, but otherwise the skin should be relatively fitted, or "dry." The ears are small drop ears whose inner edges are flush with the head. 'Flying' ears are considered undesirable.

Naturally, Rottweilers are a tailed dog. There are at least two different explanations as to why tails were originally bobbed. One version is that tails were originally removed to prevent breakage and infection that would occur when the tail became covered in mud and other debris collected from pastures and livestock. Another is that as working dogs they were bobbed to avoid a "tail tax" (the method used to count livestock being driven to market was to count tails). Today, many owners in U.S. decide to have the tails removed soon after the puppy's birth for purely cosmetic reasons. The tail is usually docked to the first joint, and in general should give the impression of a lengthened topline. In the past docking was a commonly accepted practice, but it has been banned in many European countries and Australia as well as Mexico.

The chest is deep and should reach the dog's elbows, giving tremendous lung capacity. The back should be straight, never sloping. According to FCI standard, the Rottweiler stands 61 to 68 cm (24-27 inches) at the withers for males, and 56 to 63 cm (22-25 inches) for females.[1] Average weight is 50 kg (110 pounds) for males and 42 kg (95 pounds) for females

Weight: 95-130 pounds (43-59 kg.)

Height: 24-27 inches (61-69 cm.)

Coat: Short, hard and thick

Activity level: Medium (relatively inactive indoors)

Learning rate: High

Temperament: Calm, trainable, courageous, devoted, reliable, fiercely protective, strong fighters, serious, steady, confident, highly intelligent

Guard dog ability: Very high

Watch-dog ability: Very high

Litter size: 8

Life span: 10-12 years

In the hands of a responsible owner, a well-trained and socialized Rottweiler can be a reliable, alert dog and a loving companion.[citation needed] However, any poorly trained dog can become a danger in the wrong circumstances. In general Rottweilers are fond of children, very devoted, quick to learn, and eager to please. They are typically very bright dogs. Rottweilers are playful animals who may frequently demand attention from their owners. However, if they are not receiving the mental stimulation they desire, they will find creative and sometimes destructive ways to elicit it. Such behavioral problems as chewing, barking for attention and eating less can be a result of lack of human interaction. The Rottweiler is a good working dog that is also good for protection of children, as well as guard duties.

The Rottweiler is a steady dog with a self-assured nature, but early socialization and exposure to as many new people, animals, and situations as possible are very important in developing these qualities. The Rottweiler also has a natural tendency to assert dominance if not properly trained. Rottweilers' large size and strength make this an important point to consider: an untrained, poorly trained, or abused Rottweiler can learn to be extremely aggressive and destructive and, if allowed to run at large, may pose a significant physical threat to humans or other animals. They can be strong-willed (bull-headed) and should be trained in a firm, fair, and consistent manner - the owner must be perceived as the leader. If the owner fails to achieve this status the Rottweiler will readily take on the role. However, Rottweilers respond readily to a clear and benevolent leader. Aggression in Rottweilers is associated with poor breeding, poor handling, lack of socialization, natural guarding tendencies, and abuse.

The Rottweiler is not usually a barker. Male dogs are silent watchers who notice everything and are often quite stoic. Females may become problem barkers in order to protect their den. An attentive owner is usually able to recognize when a Rottweiler perceives a threat. Barking is usually a sign of annoyance with external factors (car alarms or other disturbances) rather than a response to actual threats.

The Rottweiler Welfare Association offers the following advice for would-be Rottweiler owners

Rottweiler is a tough and hardy breed, but potential owners should be aware of known health issues that can affect this breed. Rottweilers are highly prone to be affected by serious diseases mainly to its hips. The most serious genetic health risks a Rottweiler faces are canine hip dysplasia (CHD), subvalvular aortic stenosis (SAS), elbow dysplasia, and osteosarcoma. Other conditions which may affect this breed include hypothyroidism, gastric torsion (bloat), and allergies.[4] Rottweiler owners should have their dogs' hips, elbows, heart, and eyes tested by a veterinarian before breeding. DNA tests should also be performed to screen for von Willebrand's disease (vWD). Rottweilers typically live between 8 and 11 years.[5]

The breed is an ancient one, and its history stretches back to the Roman Empire. In those times, the legions traveled with their meat on the hoof and required the assistance of working dogs to herd the cattle. One route the army traveled was through W鐪塺ttemberg and on to the small market town of Rottweil. The principal ancestors of the first Rottweilers during this time was supposed to be the Roman war dog, local sheepdogs the army met on its travels, and dogs with molosser appearance coming from England and The Netherlands.

This region eventually became an important cattle area, and the descendants of the Roman cattle dogs proved their worth in both driving and protecting the cattle from robbers and wild animals. However, by the end of the 19th Century, the breed had declined so much that in 1900 there was only one female to be found in the town of Rottweil. But the build up to the World War I saw a great demand for police dogs, and that led to a revival of interest in the Rottweiler.

From that time the breed has become popular with dog owners, and in 1935 was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club. In 1936, Rottweilers were exhibited in Britain at Crufts. In 1966, a separate register was opened for the breed.

The first Rottweiler club in Germany, named DRK ("Deutscher Rottweiler-Klub" 閳?German Rottweiler Club) was created the 13 January 1907, and followed by the creation of the SDRK ("S鐪塪deutscher Rottweiler-Klub" 閳?South German Rottweiler Club) on the 27 April 1907 and became the IRK (International Rottweiler Club). The DRK counted around 500 Rottweiler, the SDRK 3000 Rottweilers. The goals of the two clubs were different. The DRK wanted to produce working dogs and did not emphasize the morphology of the Rottweiler. The main stud dog of this club was Lord von der Teck. The IRK tried to produce a homogeneous morphology according to their standard. One of the main stud dogs of this club was Ralph von Neckar.

A popular misconception about the Rottweiler is that the breed was bred for dog fighting

OK I have a Jack Russel cross and she is lovely. Shes not to big, always is friendly and loves being patted!

~Good around small kids, and fairly large groups (50 people): yep! Just she doesn't know which one to go to be patted by !

~Active -Can run and do stuff like fetch etc: yep!

~Can be calm, sleep normally etc =P: Yep!

~Can stay alone (i suppose this depends on training): Yep all of our family work/go to school!

~Not extremely tiny (no chihuahua) : No

~Not extremely big (great Dane etc.) : No

~Shouldn't shed too much hair - should stay there and be clipped when needed : We have never brushed her or clipped her!

~Not violent, except when injured (i.e if someone punches him he should bite them, but i suppose this is also training) : I am not sure, because we are very nice to her and she is always friendly and loyal, she has never bite anyone before though!

~Strength can be anything, doesn't matter. : I'm not to sure about her strengh...

If you don't want a Jack Russel try this:

Firstly, cocker spaniels are awful with children! They tend to be very stressed dogs and do not handle children well at all. A springer spaniel resembles the cocker and is much better with children. Stay away from the working breeds, rottweilers, shepherds, border collies as they are high energy dogs and require a lot of exercise. Also stay away from retrievers as they are also high energy. Please keep in mind that ALL dogs shed! Dogs are not naturally violent, they are taught to be violent! The smaller breeds tend to not be well with large groups of people, and should probably be avoided. Check out this site, they have pictures and a wealth of information regarding temperament, size, grooming requirements, etc. They've even got a quiz to help you choose a breed that closely meets what you are looking for! Good luck in your search!

A previous poster suggested a Jack Russel, this is a VERY high energy dog, and probably not what you are looking for.

Poodles. And they are very smart, easy to train to boot. The main "issue" is they require grooming. come in 3 sizes.

Poodles are not fluffly, silly dogs as they are often portrayed, but intelligent, even tempered dogs.

If you want them clipped like the "crazy show dogs" you can, but there are "normal" poodle clips, that makes them look normal, average, etc.

Cocker spaniels can have "rage" issues- and can be very hyper. Golder retrievers are almost over bred and are having alot of temperment problems showing because of it. Labs are nice, but really depend on the breeder, as many labs are HYPER, and dont know their size, knock everyone over....Labs are sometimes "headstrong" too.

Best breed of dog to have (read specifics please)?

well really there is NO such dog.. perhaps a mutt..

the BEST dog around kids is a WELL SOCIALIZED one..

Golden Retreivers - they are "soft mouthed" dogs - bred to be patient and retrieve things gentaly (less problems with biting)... can stay alone.. but dogs are pack animals and should not be alone much...

ONLY thing that does not fit is shedding - BUT you can control shedding with grooming and BETTER FOOD

Cockers are NOT good with kids.. dispite how Disney portrayed them - they are often high strung...

NOT A PUPPY ! pups jump and chew.. they are NOT good with small kids.. and heck small kids are NOT good with pups.. if you have small kids how will you ever house train a pup??

please consider adopting an adult dog - Golden Retreiver or Retreiver cross from a shelter - remember you might not always find the perfect dog on your first try

NEVER buy from a pet store!

AVOID - intelligent breeds, like Border Collies.. they will be too much to handle and always looking for jobs..

AVOID TERRIERS - any dog that was bred to kill is not going to be good with kids (most,if not all, terriers were originally bred to hunt and kill.. either rats, gophers, foxes, etc)

There are quite a few online sites where you can plug your specific needs into a data base to select the type of breed that best fits your criteria. For additional choices plug into google/yahoo search engine the term "Breed Selector"...you'll find a lot available.

No one person on an internet site can give you the information you need for yourself and your family.

I've included a list of Breed Selector search databases, for me this is the best resource I could give you. Only *you* know the types of breeds that will appeal to you and your family, the specific needs you have and your home situation.

BTW having said that I offer only this suggestion.

If/When you chose your breed, first always consider adoption via a purebreed rescue group or something along the lines of petfinder.com

Secondly, if you choose a breeder, go armed with a lot of research material, including the genetic problems of the breed - make sure your breeder tests for those and ask to see validation - including PRA/Cerf #, OFA/PennHip number, etc...so that you can verify those tests were done and the results are as shown by the breeder.

Also, ask *why* the breeder chose that breeding, there should be more than "because"...a good breeder does a mating for specific reason - adding something to their bloodline, correcting something they feel is not strong enough in their lines, adding depth to their lines gene pool, etc.

That's really all I have to offer. Best of luck finding your new family member.

its hard to say a specific breed would meet your needs, because temperment can vary with upbringing and training. Mostly any breed of dog can give you what you are seeking with proper training.

But to answer your question, consider the following breed options:

Lab

Golden Retriever

Boxer

English Bulldog

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

=) Well you were very descriptive in what you want. The following are what I think would be best for you, however all dogs should be monitored around small children and in large groups, and will need effective training as a pup to become what you want, labs, golden ret., weimaraners (hyper), german short haired pointers (kinda need to hunt) , rohdesian ridgeback (leery of strangers, vizsla. In personal experience beagle are insane, and cockers are not good with children. Hope you find your perfect dog.

Definitely NOT a Coker Spaniel. They are over bred and have major aggression issues. They are fear biters which is the worst kind of aggression. If you like the look of the Cocker Spaniel you should look into the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. They are good around kids as long as they are mature enough to not pull their hair and ears. They can be at one minute very active and playful but then the next minute they will be on your lap sleeping. The only thing is they are very bonded to their owner that they cannot be left home alone for long hours .They will suffer from separation issues.

I hate to say it, but personality differs greatly from dog to dog, even within specific breeds. I would go to www.petfinder.com. Search for one based on size, and then email the folks who have the dog (foster, rescue, whomever) and ask about temperament. Show them your list, and ask if that dog is right for you, or if they know of one that might be. Most rescue groups will bend over backwards to help you find the right dog.

Good luck!

first let me say a puppy should not be left more than 4 hrs. at a time or you will have a hard time housebreaking. any breed you choose will need training and alot of socializeing to be around kids and large groups. small kids need to be trained on how to behave with a dog also.

if you want a purebred you can check with animal shelters (more and more purebreds are ending up in shelters). most shelters temperment test the dogs so you have a better idea what you are getting.

if you don't find what you want there then i suggest you go to the AKC web page ( akc.org) they can show you all 159 breeds that AKC reconize and it will tell you all about the breed and give you list of breeders. you can also go into google type in the breed and it will come up with the breed club for that breed and they will give you all information includeing health issues. they also have rescues that live in foster homes, foster parents will be able to tell you everything about dog and normally they are housebroke already.. cockers require alot of brushing inbetween grooming sessions and are prone to ear infections. Pugs shed 365 day a year. short coats does not mean less shedding.

i can't give you a specific breed, you need to do your home work and research the breed you are interested in. there are drawbacks in every breed and not knowing you personaly it is hard to judge what it the best for your family. some breeds are barkers, all dogs require a secure fenced yard, some are more difficult to train but all need training. there are no push button dogs.

all most all dogs shed, some more than others . do your homework, don't buy from pet stores, or BYB ( ads in paper).breed rescue or shelter rescue have already spay/nutered dog, shots are up to date.

good luck on your search

I agree 100% w/ Rachel H. We have two Jack Russell terrier mix dogs, littermates, neutered males. One we got at age 9 weeks (tall legged), the other was living w/ friends %26amp; we took him in at age 9 months (short legged). They had always had 'puppy playdates' w/ each other. Jack Russells have a reputation for possibly being overly hyper %26amp; uncontrollable. Much of this can be due to training or lack of it. Again, our dogs are Jack Russell mixes (with what we're not sure, maybe pomeranian). They were raised w/ their mother until adoption so we got to see the more docile temperament of the mother, the Jack Russell. Our dogs are sweethearts %26amp; meet the specifics you listed, as Rachel replied. (no need for me to repeat that). Ours are lap dogs, love to cuddle, sleep w/ us, are good w/ kids %26amp; groups, also good watch dogs, alert, nothing happens that they don't notice. Due to good training by us they are mostly well behaved %26amp; listen well, are not excessive barkers %26amp; they've learned to not be hyper or jump. They just turned a year old %26amp; b/c of the addition of the second dog at the age of 9 months, some re-training of both has been necessary %26amp; is ongoing. Jack Russels, even our mixes require consistent ongoing training. They are highly intelligent dogs but can be strong willed, just means they need consistent ongoing training as stated. With any dog it's best to spend time on good training now than to spend time on the consequences of poor training forever. You will have a better behaved more loveable dog. Jack Russells can be 'active' %26amp; may require more exercise than some other dogs or they could become bored (read destructive), so can any breed of dog. They would play fetch %26amp; other 'people games' more often but now since they have each other they're less interested in that %26amp; play puppy games w/ each other. They enjoy their leash walks (together w/ each on his own leash) %26amp; their romps together in our fenced back yard. These dogs, especially the longer legged kind can be good climbers, scaling a 4ft plywood wall or jumping from the floor onto the counter or tabletop. We have a 4ft fence %26amp; he has not scaled that. That is just a touch of their unique abilities. Most things will not be a problem w/ good training or good knowledge. For our 'escape artist' we added a wood rail to the top of the plywood wall, no problems since. Love our pups! The ones I almost didn't go see when I heard their mix. Regarding personal experience w/ Cocker Spaniels, my husband had one from puppyhood till she died. She was cute %26amp; loyal but the constant grooming, ear infections, etc were a real pain. A higher maintenance dog. I had a yellow labrador, they're silly high energy dogs that could play fetch for hours %26amp; love water (mine did). Reminds me of the Marmaduke comic! They need alot of daily exercise but are family loyal %26amp; good around young children. Growing up we had what was thought to be a husky-shepherd-beagle mix, nice dog until it got older %26amp; became a bit 'nippy'. I suggest a mix of some sort since you don't seem to be breed particular. They often have less health related issues than purebreds %26amp; possibly a better temperament. You have to do research, which you are. Get several opinions %26amp; research your choices on the 'net on dog sites %26amp; in books from the library to help you decide. Don't rule out a shelter dog that you like that has a good temperament, that's half the battle, getting good temperament. Whatever, train puppy well %26amp; love puppy always, their love is unconditional. This is not suggesting that an adult shelter dog wouldn't be suitable if you have the time %26amp; patience to devote to a dog that could have some 'issues', not all shelter dogs do, most of them are loyal lifetime companions %26amp; all dogs require training upon entering a new home. A puppy is a lot of work, worth it.

We have a Border Collie. He meets all the criteria except the shedding part. With proper grooming that shouldn't be a problem. He's great with kids (he likes to herd them all together). He is definitely a "pack" dog. He wants to be with the family all the time. He stays by himself all day while we are gone and doesn't get into trouble. Although I highly recommend kennel or crate training your dog. This helps when you travel and take the pooch along. It also gives them their own space to get away from time to time. Our dog goes in his "house" in the afternoons to nap. We leave the door open for him.
