My dog has bald spots?

I recently noticed that she liked it when I scratched her sides. Now I've noticed that she has 5 random bald spots in those areas. There is also a new spot on her back that lost a small amount of hair. I noticed around it that it looked like dandruf. The existing bald spots have skin that looks normal and not dry. What could it be? She never has fleas, she rarely leaves the comfort of her dog bed and seems fine otherwise. She is a 10 year old Whippet.

Get her an appointment at your vet for a proper diagnosis. Could be skin issues, could be a thyroid imbalance, could be Cushings....

Bald spots can be a few different things...Could be ringworm, could be a type of alopecia..could be a skin condition.. Your best bet is to take her in to see a vet.. They are the only ones that tell you whats going on.. I don't want to scare you but some forms of balding can be more serious then others.

It could be mange, could be a nervous condition, I had a dog that would pull big hunks out of his fur, whenever I left the house, seperation anxiety, that's what the vet said. If it is bad enough, the vet can give you meds for the dog. It could also be a shampoo you are using on him. Use a mild shampoo, like baby soap. Also, don't use those anti-flea once a month drops, my dogs had terrible reactions to it. To control fleas, get Adams spray, attach it to your hose, and spray your lawn, no more flea problem. Another thing, think about changing his food. I use "Prescription diet Canine ID." It is hypo allergenic, and developed by vets. My previous dog lived to be 22 on that food. Last bit of advice, use Non-fragranced Laundry detergent. Every dog I've ever owned developed rashes, or itching or other problems with fragranced detergents. Dogs DO NOT tolerate perfumes. There skin is very sensitive. Good Luck!! p.s. Also, I would take him to the vet, and get a blood test, this will check for liver, thyroid, some parasites, white count, etc. Also, have his ears checked by the vet, many dogs have painful ear conditions, and the only way the dog has of "telling" you this is by whining, itching his ears, or just pulling out his hair in frustration. The vet will look deep inside the ear canal to make sure there is no yeast or parasite, etc.
