My dog is scratching so much he is leaving raw spots and scabs on his back!?

I have an Eskimo Spitz. Where his tail curls over his back he is scratching so much that he has ripped out alot of his hair, the skin is red and there are some spots that have scabbed over. I bathed him in an antibacterial shampoo that was supposed to help with crusts and scabs but he is still digging. He doesn't have ANY fleas and he is an inside dog. He doesn't go outside and roll in the grass. He is 2 years old and this has just recently started. Any ideas?

Many dogs have a skin disease, and this time of year they get really dry and scratch. Therefore leaving scabs. My dog, as well as many different breeds do the same thing. Try to keep the nails very short and my vet also recommended putting some vegetable oil in her food. I use a capful. Don't bathe your dog as often, only when really dirty and don't use anything with fragrance in it. I use baby shampoo on my dog. II figure if it is mild enough for a baby, it will be good for my dog. The vegetable oil has really made a difference.

Your dog might have some allergic reaction? It's probably better to go to the vet, even if it's expensive. Sometimes the shampoo makes things worse.. he might have sensitive skin.

Please take him to a vet before he causes himself more harm. His skin might be dry and itchy. But I think best would be to take him to a vet.

Although it may seem like he doesn't have fleas some dogs are allergic to fleas so one bite would feel like 10. My sister's dog has this problem and it sounds like your dog may have the same thing. The fleas do not have to live on your dog for your dog to have this problem.

Allergies? At least try some benedryl. 25 mg for a 40 lbs. dog. Cortizone spray to help the sores heal.

He might have a skin disorder that needs treatment from a vet. Maybe psoriasis? Take him to a vet and he can tell you what it is, but to me it sounds like a skin problem.

He needs to go to the vet. He could have some sort of skin problem. Hopefully it's as simple as dry skin. But he really should see a vet to be sure. Better to be safe.

Your dog probably has whats called a "hot spot". I'm not for sure what you have to do for it but you really should contact your Vet.

He may have something called mange. My dog had it. I had to take her to the vet and get some kind of powdered medication to mix with water and rub on spots that were raw. It helped her a lot, you should look into that.

My dogs have had problems with this too. I found that Sulfodene helps the best. (You can get it at wal-mart in the pet area.) In this case just dump in on the area with the problem and rub in. Repet every couple of days untill better. I have also found this help to grow back the hair faster.

My dog did the same thing, and she had a really bad flea problem. Take him to the vet. The vet will know what to do.

It could be an allergic reaction to dog food. My dog went through this she is 2 yrs old. Some dog food contains corn glutamate which some dogs can be allergic. My dog was allergic to that and we changed her food and treats. Now she stopped scratching and pulling out her hair. Take your dog to the vet anyways just in case.

It sounds like dry skin if you use a tsp of vegetable oil in his dog food that should help. It may also be an allergy you should try Benadryl to see if this helps.
