Removing Skunk Smell from dog?

Hi I have a border collie/golden retriever mix. She has a fairly long coat (a hair is about an inch long) and I received her from a previous owner. I believe the dog was skunked before we received her, and was the reason why we received her. She smells like a typical dog, but after every bath it seems water brings the skunk smell back out thats embedded in heer coat. Any suggestions in removing the stench will be appreciated!!!

The major molecules that make skunk-spray stink are sulfur compounds 閳?they閳ユ獧e closely related to other unpleasant odors such as rotten eggs. You can use tomato juice on a pet that閳ユ獨 been sprayed by a skunk 閳?and you might even think it works 閳?but there閳ユ獨 no scientific evidence that tomato juice really does work on skunk spray.

Here閳ユ獨 a reason people might think it works. Some experts speculate that at high doses of skunk spray, the human nose stops smelling the odor. So if you then bathe your pet in tomato juice 閳?the odor of the juice becomes stronger than the odor of the skunk. So thinking that the tomato juice worked to get out the odor is an olfactory illusion 閳?an illusion for your nose.

So how do you get rid of skunk odor? Some experts suggest a mixture of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide 閳?followed by a tap water rinse. This solution is odorless, but be careful 閳?it might bleach your pet閳ユ獨 fur. Here閳ユ獨 one recipe that Dr. William F. Wood of Humboldt State University recommends:

Make a mixture of 閳? quart of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide (drug store variety), 1/4 cup of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and a teaspoon of liquid detergent. After 5 minutes rinse the animal with water. The mixture cannot be stored as it readily becomes ineffective. Also, IT MUST NOT BE STORED IN A CLOSED CONTAINER. It releases gas so the container may break and pose an explosion hazard. It is best to mix it in an open container and use it immediately. One final caution, the recipe may bleach the pet閳ユ獨 hair.閳?br>

*I was going to say tomato juice until I read this. Might be something to try all though I'd have clenched teeth through the process.

Shave it...it's no use...LOL

Have you try tomatoe juice...I heard it work better than shampoo. Dunk the stinky pouch in it and soak for a while...you might be able to get special shampoo to make the smell less offensive but it won't completely go away. Take it to a groomer.

tomato juice and lots of it. let it soak in for as long as your dog will stay in one spot, then rinse and shampoo. if the smell is still there repeat the process.

wet your dog and then douce the dog with tomato juice it usually takes two large cans of juice at room temp. leave the juice on the dog rubbing it into the dogs fur for a few moments until odor is absorbed, then rinse and wash dog as usual. Honestly it works. I had to do this to my doberman after she had an encounnter with a skunk.

Golioths Caretaker has the right formula. The hydrogen peroxide formula does the trick but it may bleach the dog's hair slightly (a black dog may pick up a slightly reddish hue).

Good old female douche works great and doesn't smell like a bunch of tomatoes. I know that this sounds strange, but believe me it really works.

Wash your dog in Woolite, yes the stuff you wash your delicates in. This really does the trick.

I had a dog that got sprayed a few years ago, and i must agree with the baking soda and peroxide mix, you can also add a little baby shampoo to it to make it easier to move around, if your dog is white and blond it shouldn't ruin her coat, may actually make it brighter, also, you might have to wash her a few times, and let it soak, skunk is a hard odor to get out and it really has to wear off completely but the wash helps ALOT!! good luck!

Massingill douche. I know groomers who buy this stuff by the case to wash skunk sprayed dogs.

Hey, I had the same problem with my Lab/Border Collie. We got rid of it by using Johnson and Johnson Baby Shampoo believe it or not. I've heard tomato juice works also, but it seems a bit expensive. Good Luck!
