we found our dog outside dangling by his chain. we promptly took him in and gave him a warm bath and gave him some milk. when we set him down he walked around like he could not see ware he was going. he would hit a wall and just stay there. after a bit he would start to claw at the wall and then turn around. he was shakeing and acting like it was painfull for him to breath. we have put him in a laundry basket and surrounded by warm blankets. he has fallen asleep but i need to know wut is wrong with him. there are no vets around us that will see him. he is a wired hair terror. he is less than one one year old and we got him for our daughter. please help us.

I can't believe a vet won't take him, that is insane. But that aside. First KEEP HIM AWAY FROM YOUR DAUGHTER until you know what is wrong. The breathing problem is probably from being on that chain. No more milk for now because it will cause mucus that will make it harder for him to breath. Soft dog food in spoon fulls is best. The running into walls sounds like he could be blind, but maybe not. If that chain was tight and he had been on it awhile there may be some eye problems due to lack of oxygen. This may get better. If you are going to keep him and there is not a vet that will tend to him all you can do is SLOWLY feed him (not alot at once) keep him warm and gently massage his neck. God Bless you for caring enough to work with him. You will be amazed at what a great pet you have found if all works out. But be prepared that he may not make it and prepare your daughter (I do not know how old she is). Let her know that trying is better than not even if you lose the battle. Also, you need a way to have the dog checked for hook worms, if you have any other pets this is highly contagious and can be fatal.

you say there's no vet around that will see him? What the??? Vets love animals...they're in business to help them....get your dog to a vet immediately...he was dangling by a leash????? Obviously, he's injured! He probably cut off oxygen to his brain and has damage.....most vets will even open their office in an emergency...and this CERTAINLY warrants an immediate examination!! When you take on the responsibility of dog ownership, this includes emergency and routine vet care!!

Sounds like some type of neurolgical damage.

Why won't vets see him? Did he bite or didn't you pay the bill?

You may have to do some driving then. Find the closest animal emergency clinic. Be prepared to spend a good chunk of money.

I doubt very very much that he will get bettter on his own and right now he is sufferring (the shaking, the clawing the wall)

Was he tied on a slip collar - a MAJOR NEVER DO THAT?

it reads as if your animal is in shock,and needs immediate attention.

If he was dangling his nick he may have lost to much Oxygen to the brain. And have brain damage in that Cass he may have to be put to sleep so he will not suffer any more than he has to. And if he has to be put to sleep. I know how much this will hurt you and how hard it will be to put your dog to sleep. Because i had to put my dog to sleep two year`s ago because he was suffering. And i loved my dog very much and some time`s i still cry about it. and i am 48 years old so i know the hurt you have to be feeling right know.

This is the reason why NO dog should be chained up outside!! Maybe I am being a b$^ch, but giving the poor dog a bath and some milk is not going to fix the lack of oxygen he had to his brain. A bath is the last thing I would think of at a time like this. My dog would be in the car on the way to the vet..then again, this would never happen...I don't chain my dogs.

I'm sure there is a vet in your area that will see the dog. It is an emergency situation. If one vet won't then call every single one in the phonebook. Better yet, just walk the dog in there, they will see you!

I don't think people realize that if there is something wrong with their dog.. (sick dying, being strangled by a chain) it is their responsibility to get that animal to a vet. If someone was to call the SPCA on you..you would be in lots of trouble.

Your dog might have neurological problems due to lack of oxygen to the brain. In this scenario he probably will not make a full recovery. On the other hand he might have a collapsed airway which he may or may not recover from. If he can't breath he will need to be intubated and only a vet has the means with which to do this.

ok the obvious answer and one I have given many times is to take the dog to the vet. some of you answering on here are saying that it can't be true that a vet won't take the pup, that vets have hearts and are only for helping animals- thee woman said she can't find a vet to take the pup - I believe her - it has happened to me on several occasions- and I had tried all of the vets in a 50 mile radius of my home! so quit acting like it doesn't happen - it does happen all of the time. so quit preaching at her and try to give her some advice she can use! bless you dear - I agree with the gal up there (ALDA) that does dog rescue- no more milk- keep him warm and hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

you are doing everything right but call a vet just in case he has broken his collar bone go wake him up and see if he got better or worse check his heart beat and his ribs if any thing has worsned or you find something out of the ordinary take him to the vet fast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't believe that there is no vet in your area that will see him.He needs to get to a vet NOW!!! no waiting, no excuses!! He has suffered some serious injury possibly brain damage..his condition could be life threatening.

This type of thing is exactly why people need to get established with a vet as soon as they get a dog/puppy and develope a relationship.

i think the chain was the problem. he was dangling right? so he could have oxygen deprivation, and could b why he cant see. he needs a vet asap. bless his heart that he was able 2 get some rest. call around to different vet clinics and see if they have a number to an emergency clinic - even if they are closed most will have an answering machine that usually will have an after hours emergency number.

You need to call them immediately. your dog is probably in shock. please dont let him suffer.

Normally, I'm really nice, but honestly, that's why chaining is banned in many communities. Dogs die from getting caught and hung by their chains on a very frequent basis.

What kind of a collar did you have the dog on? Always use a plain buckle collar or a harness when chaining your dog. NEVER use a choke collar or any collar that can tighten, cutting off the dog's airway. Be very careful to make sure that there is nothing in the dog's environment that he could hang himself on i.e. by jumping off a porch when his chain is too short to make it to the ground, or by looping around a tree so tightly that he can't breathe.

As far as your dog's injuries, they may be as minor as a bruised throat, or as major as a damaged trachea. There's no way of telling unless you take the dog to a vet.

Meanwhile, don't feed your dog milk (dogs are generally lactose intolerant). Keep an eye on him (if he was deprived of oxygen for too long, he may be brain damaged), and make sure he eats and drinks. If he doesn't, he may have sustained some major neck damage. If he doesn't start acting normally soon, you need to take him to a vet! Find one that will take him, even if it means driving out of your way. Your dog is your responsibility; he has no one but you to look out for him.
