Why is my dog still scratching even though I bathe her constantly, she seems miserable scratching al

We treated the home for fleas and we also have used flea shampoo and dip. So, I thought maybe her skin is dry so I bought a soothing dog shampoo to condition her skin and coat but I she still has the same results scratching constantly. I have purchased the more expensive shampoos and conditioners for her. Poor thing seems so miserable. Please someone help! She is also having hair loss no sores or open sores, just the hair loss in certain areas of her body. We also have used the drops for fleas along the back and flea collars. All home areas have been treated as well. Is there something naturally that can be given orally? Awaiting an itchy answer in San Antonio

Stop using flea shampoos. It irrriates their skin more and do not use any flea prevention from Walmart. The Permethrin active ingredient in those produts ar eknown to cause adverse skin reaction in dogs and in some cases, seizures.

She probably has skin allergies. The majority of the dog population does. We see at least 20 dogs PER DAY at the clinic that are there to be treated. The most common treatment is a shot of Depomedrol once a month. Try it. Be sure he is dosing correctly (1cc per 15 pounds initial dose, and as soon as you see him scratching again - at least 30 days after first injection - go back in for 1cc per 20 pounds every time) and bathe her NO MORE THAN once a wekk with an oatmeal based, perferrably soap free shampoo. Your vet will have some, but most vet suppliers cost more. Pet stores such as petsmart or jeffers pet supply will have them. You can order anything from Jeffers online. They even have Frontline. Either way, try that, and this should help greatly. If you are not comfortable giving the cortisone (Depo) shots monthly, they also have a Prednisone tablet you give everyday. But get her some relief!! And GOOD LUCK!!!

Sounds to me like she has an allergy to something in or near your home. Take her to the vet and let them know they can give you something to help her with allergies.

Many dogs suffer from skin conditions, which bathing alone will NOT help. Consult with a vet , and see if your dog has a skin condition which requires meds.

Yes she is miserable, because you bathe her constantly.

Wash your hair everyday and watch it friz too.

Thyroid problems can cause hair loss also. You need to get her into a vet and have that checked out. Too much bathing isn't good either.

She is probably scratching BECAUSE of all the bathing that you do! A dog produces natural oils (Sebum being but one) and you are washing it all away and possibly leaving shampoo residue instead.

Check with your Vet to see if there is any underlying cause and then leave off the bathing routine!

Try this website..It has alot of interesting things about scratching and itching. Make sure when u bath ur pet that you get all the shampoo out...it could be causing itching..

Well the hair loss is probably her just shedding.

But sometimes its a sign that their sick.

Especially if she's always scratching like that and youv tried flea dips and that sort of thing.

Take her to a vet.

Hmmm - you might try a medicated shampoo (you can purchase it at your vet's office)

I had a Shepherd with itchy, dry skin and her hair was coming off in patches. Turns out she had some sort of skin alergy. I bathe her weekly with the medicated shampoo and it works great for her!

Good luck!

I would have to agree., It sounds like an allergy. One of our dogs was allergic to the dog food that she had been eating. You would never connect dog food to a rash. But we changed the food to a better brand and the rash, scratching and allergy went away. A trip to the vet may be necessary.

have you thought about a food allergy? i've seen a lot of dogs especially develop them even to things they could eat before.the signs you describe hit the mark.as far as natural flea treatment try bathing her in dr bronners peppermint hemp soap. fleas hate it. dogs and cats care little for it also.try bathing w/her and you'll see why.its very cold and...minty.i used it for all my cats who couldn't take the chemical treatments.

She's scratching because her coat is so dry. Bathing her so frequently depleates the skin and coat of it's natural bodily oils and causes the skin to dry out. You should only bathe your dog once a month. Don't use anything too fancy on the coat or the chemicals could be very harsh and dry out the coat even more. A simple oatmeal shampoo will provide moisture for the coat and skin. Also, make sure you brush your dog every day even if it's just a quick brush to distribute the oils.

Likely a food allergy or sensitivity. Bathing will NOT help and is probably making it worse. Also make sure her Thyroid is checked, that can cause skin problems.

Try a raw food diet. Commercial kibble is full of additives and stuff that your dog doesn't need. Dogs need meat, bones, and organs minimum. If the dog already has food issues, you'd probably want to forgo veggies until you're sure she's not sensitive to them.

You are not supposed to wash your dog that much! If you have to wash them, only wash them every 6 months! If you wash them that much, their skin will get extremely dry, so forget about that "conditioning" shampoo, it will not help. Chances are she does not have fleas. But you should deffinatly get her checked out at the vet because it could be soemthing more serious. She could have had an allergic reaction to one of the flea treatments, you never know... but the vet will :)

Why is my dog still scratching even though I bathe her constantly, she seems miserable scratching all the day?

well you should only bathe her once a month at most! (a month is what vets say is the best amount of time between bathing, not 6 months like Brittany said, that would be gross!) youre drying out the poor things skin and most likely giving her dandruff! STOP WASHING HER and switch to brushing about once a day! dogs can never be brushed to much....it makes their coats shiny, distributes natural oils evenly, calms her, is a great way to socalize with her, and will lget her blood flowing better! also you should maybe take her to the vet just incase! good luck.

I agree with those that say dry skin. You're bathing your dog too much. If you've done what you've said about spraying outside where the dog spends it's time, bombed in the house and used a good flee shampoo you can figure it's most likely not flees. She has, with the exception of possible allergies, dry skin from all those baths. Try frequent brushing to generate and distribute her natural oils.

she may have an allergy. dogs sometimes need to be put on antihistamines just like people. talk to your vet.

Don't bathe her constantly because that will dry her skin and maybe you should go to your vet and ask them what to do if you really don't know.
