My Poor Dog-Allergy and constant itching.....help?

We took her to the vet , the said it was a flea allergy, from just one flea! They gave her a cortisone shot, a med pill to kill any fleas instantly and the liquid frontline and an antibiotic. she is done taking all the meds and is still itching like crazy. She is rapidly loosing hair around her backend and legs and underbelly. We called the vet back and they told us to give her Benedryl and it didn't work. It just made her heart beat harder and she got thirsty, but she is still itching the same amount. My vet is not in today , she wont be back in until tomorrow-I just want to know if anyone knows what to give my dog to help her stop itching. She is a Chocolate Lab and weighs 60 lbs and is 10months old. I am hoping there is an over the counter product I can buy for her, or something natural that will help. Please only answer if your dog has had this problem and you solved it somehow. Thank you for your time.

My Boxer suffers from allergies. Here is what has worked for me...Bathe her with an oatmeal, soap-free shampoo. (Got mine at PetSmart). Also, check with your vet about Claritin (bought the generic at Wal-Mart). One pill every 24 hours. I also got Derm Caps from my vet (they are a fatty acid supplement that helps skin and hair)-one pill every 24 hrs.

We have not had any allergy problems in over a month on this regiment.

The problem with benadryl is you have to consistently give it to your dog at 6-8 hr intervals every day for it to be effective. Claritin stays in their system for 24 hours, so it's easier to do once a day dosing.

If the vet said it's an allergy try Benadryl spray on the itchy spots instead of the benadryl by mouth. You can also use a 1% hydrocortisone cream on the area, and benadryl comes in a cream also.

how about giving her a bath with Aveeno. we used it on our dog before and it seemed to help. don't be too worried aout hair loss. it will grow back.

sounds like an allergy (like humans) same as hayfever like the cgange in the weather seasonal changes such as your dog casting can cause constant itching had to have my dog put on steriods for a short while if feeding ordinary dog food try changing some of to dry food such as james kibble or wagg kibble is dear but specialises in skin disorders

It might not be an allergy to fleas but a different type of allergy. The food brand you are feeding your pup might have an effect on it. If you are buying from a grocery store, she might be having an allergic reaction to the corn. Don't go on vet food because it's pretty much the same just more expensive. If you try more natural foods it might help your help. Don't forget that a Chocolate lab isn't an adult till he reaches 2yrs old, so you need to feed him Large Breed Puppy food until he's 2, then switch him to Large Breed Adult. Don't go with IAMS, Eukanuba or any grocery store brand food because she'll still be itching and scratching. Try giving her an oatmeal bath, a dog shampoo that is not high in smell because the perfume might burn her skin. Hope this was helpful.

Do you use Tide detergent? A LOT of dogs have allergies to this brand, and it fits with where her hair loss is. If you do, switch to something else, I use Purex (my dog has TONS of allergies, and she's fine with this). Do you know for sure that she does not have food allergies? You may want to look into this. Also it could be an environmental allergy, do you have her outside laying in the yard a lot? She could be allergic to grass, try keeping her indoors. Many dogs have problems with specific cleaning supplies as well, so make sure anything that you use regularly is pet friendly. Another thing is she might simply have very dry skin making her itchy. If you think this could be it, start giving her some fish oil pills ( you can get 1000mg pills in a bottle at your pharmacy/supermarket). My dobie is about the same weight and I give her 4 a day, it has significantly helped with the dandruff and dry skin. I also give brewers yeast/garlic tabs (you can find them in your local pet store usually, it has the dosage on the bottle). This is a natural flea/tick/mosquito repellent as well as being good for their skin/fur. If your dog has particular raw spots try washing the area with a gentle oatmeal cleanser and put some neosporin on it, wrap with one of the big ace bandages and cone her head so she can't get to it, or you can rub some cortizone on it, that would relieve the itching. Another idea is to get a towel wet, wring it out a bit and place it in the freezer for a while. After it has cooled down but not frozen, let the dog lay on it, this should relieve some of her itching. Hope some of this helps.
