Can anyone recommend a good dog food for dogs with food allergies?

I have two dogs, a maltese %26amp; cockerspaniel. The cocker got agressive from sevear ear infections, to calm him down he was neutered had a tonsilectomy %26amp; 2 ear scopes, antibiotic drops, oral meds. an allergy shot every 6 weeks and I have also been using a home made remedy made from vinegar, alchol and borac acid. Now non agressive dog, Better but still some problem with ears. Changed their food to Royal Canin 30 small bites. They loved it. Beautiful hair, the eye staining from tearing is gone! After eating it for 2 months the maltese started turning red around her hind-end and on her back legs, she started biting these areas until they were raw. I was told she was having problems with corn gluton in the food. Natural balance duck and potatoe formula was recommened. Been giving them this for 2weeks. They would not eat it at first so I had to mix the dry with can. They eat it but not very well. This is very expensive %26amp; It does not come in small bites, would another royal canin work?

My maltese did that butt/tail chewing thing off and on for 15years. There was no reason that I could see. A lot of the time I think it was nerves. Has anything changed in your household to make her/him feel upset. I know it sounds silly, but little dogs as well as big can be greatly affected by changes in their enviroment. Have you tried just giving the dog a half a benadryl. This works wonders on dog allergies and doesn't cost as much as essentially the same drug the vet would give. Best of luck.

I also always recommend Nutro dog food.

as a matter of fact the same day i bought the duck and potatoe food I had the groomer expel her anal glands! this had not been done in a while. There were also times the skin on her back and stomach seemed more red or a brighter pink than usual. is this common? Report It

Make your own. That way you will avoid the additives and fillers found in most commercial dog foods - and the problems that go with them.

I sympathize with you. I'd try Avo-Derm, it's made with avocado and is for dogs with skin issues, but may work for your dog. I'm familiar with the Royal Canin brand but haven't used it on my dogs (I have a cockapoo, a Border Collie/Husky, and a Shar-Pei/Boxer). Are you 100% sure that the Maltese is just not having a problem with impacted anal glands?

P.S. My friend spent OVER $1,000 at the dog allergist..........and figured out ON HER OWN that the dog was allergic to the lawn fertilizer........... after feeding the dog tofu and boiled potatoes, rice, etc......... try to think of ANYTHING that you are using different besides food, like new detergent to wash the dog's bedding, or new shampoo, etc, other than food............ just trying to save you a bit of money.

My allergy dog - a lab is on Royal Canin Venison and Potato. It took about 2 months before her ears cleared up but they did. Now she's off all of her allergy meds (100mg hydrox 2x per day) along with ear meds off and on and Cephelexin for various infections. She's healthy and normal now.

The main thing is, she can't have anything else. No treats, nothing. The only treat she gets is a bit of her food. The vet says I can give her marshmallows but we haven't done that yet.

Also - beware of your heartworm treatment. We had to switch her to Revolution from Heartguard because HG was beef based....

This food does work. You just have to stick with it.

i think royal canin is even more expensive than natural balance, isn't it? the duck and potato is very good for allergies. try adding a bit of water to it instead of the canned stuff if you're concerned about the expense--it can really add up!

With dogs who have allergies you want to be very careful about what you switch them to, as you've noticed. I'm assuming since you're doing allergy shots, you've done some type of allergy testing. If you're doing steroid shots, that's a different matter and is only treating the histamine/swelling reaction of the allergies, not the allergy itself. If you're doing true allergy shots, check the allergy lists to make sure that you're not feeding anything that your dog is allergic to. After you've done that, you want to look at the foods you've been feeding to see what the main carbohydrate and protein sources are. If your dogs have had allergic reactions to the food, you need to find both a new carb and a new protein. There are hundreds of combinations to try, but you need to be vigilant and keep records of what you've already fed and how your dogs reacted to it. It usually takes 4 to 6 months for long term allergies to show up, and often food allergies can show up that long after a single exposure to a allergen. That being said, I would recommend sticking with the current food for at least 2 to 3 months. The Natural Balance foods are good quality foods, and they have a variety of options to find one that your dogs will eat. Best of luck with this process, it can be long, difficult and expensive, especially when your dog has such serious reactions, and aggression associated with allergies.

i would recommend nutro natural choice cuz its organic, and helps dry skin and flaky skin.and if you do decide to change their food make sure you mix it properly so they dont get stomach problems.

A problem with Royal Canin foods is that they often contain wheat and corn, sometimes soy, and often beef. These are BIG BIG BIG allergens in dogs. So, avoid Royal Canin foods, it's better that way.

Avoid Nutro foods as well. They sometimes contain wheat. MAX uses corn gluten and wheat products.

Blue Buffalo has a Fish and Sweet Potato formula that would be good for a dog with allergies. Blue Buffalo is found at Petsmart. They dont use corn, wheat, soy, no by-products, no artificial anythings.

Wellness has what they call Simple Solutions, which are made for dogs with allergies. It is one protein and one carbohydrate. You can find in with duck and rice, or venison and rice. Wellness is a really good food and comes highly recommended, I have found.

Merrick has a Wilderness Blend, which is Buffalo, Venison and Salmon with varied grains like oatmeal and rice. This food you can add warm water to and it makes it's own [thick] gravy. The bites are pretty small. The food is an all-life stages for all sizes food. Meaning, any dog, regardless of age or size can eat the food. It is a VERY good food.

You could do an allergy panel on the dog to find out everything the dog is allergic to. If you are unsure about what your vet tells you, you could see a hollistic vet and they will be more likely to give you answers you could use.
