I saw a purebred dog and I am trying to figure out the breed. Can you help by this description?

This was the largest dog I have ever seen. He stood about 3 feet tall maybe more. He had long, shaggy, sandy-colored hair (almost dreadlocked). He had a stocky body and face, not skiny like a greyhound. He could have been a type of mastiff but what type? I I have searched for pictures and have not found any. If you know of good dog websites with a comprehensive list of pics, that would be very helpful.

Irish Wolfhounds are incredibly tall, have shaggy hair, but they are not overly stocky. They are big, but not like a mastiff. And most mastiffs are not shaggy.

A komondor is not that tall and is not typically sandy coloured. In fact, sandy coloured would be a ring disqualification.

I could also think of a Kuvasz or a Great Pyrenees, but a GP is fluffly %26amp; white and a Kuvasz looks kinda like a really erally big and stocky creamy coloured or white Golden Retriever.

Afghans and Borzois and very slender.

Anatolian shephard dogs are a possibility as they are big, powerful, and can have a sandy rough coat. They can be 29+ inches and well over 100lbs.

Spinone Italiano are rare and powerful looking dogs, but again, sandy is a DQ in the show ring. Doesn't mean he couldn't be, you just may not see them often.

Briards have that shaggy sandy coat, but they are not incredible tall and you might know one from Married with Children (Buck).

There is also a Scottish Deerhound that's a fairly large dog, but it's usually a shade of blue or grey.

It may have been a UKC registered dog. I'm going to take a peek at those to help. Unfortunately, the UKC site does not have photos where you'd want them. Perhaps if you read through the names and then google them, it would help. http://www.ukcdogs.com/RegistrationBreed...

Good luck on your search and please update us if you find it! : )

There are some great websites to find out and see pics of different breeds of dogs. There was one I think it was dogbreeds.com or something similar to that, just type it into a search engine. It showed pics of every breed, and even mixed breeds. I agree with the previous response- sounds like some sort of wolfhound.

Probably a komondor although they are not that tall.

kind of sounds like a sheep dog but why take my word or any body elses . If you really want to know go to the library, a bookstore or get a book from the pet store in dog breeds and you can look at all the pictures and will know when you see it, also might be on line pictures under dog breeds. good luck

I wondered about a Briard - but like the Komondors they're also not as tall as three feet.

There are also Otterhounds - but again they're a bit short.

Komondors look like this:

The only other one that I can think of is the Puli but that is even smaller

http://www.puli.de/galerie/puli03.jpg

The Pyrenese - but it's not normally so shaggy looking:

http://www.pgaa.com/canine/general/pyren...

or perhaps the Irish Wolfhound as they also come in pure white, fawn %26amp; wheaten %26amp; is probably one of the biggest dogs:

http://www.pgaa.com/canine/general/irish...

There's also a Kuvasz:

Sounds like a Komondor. Their coats cord up, but only after they are 2 years old, and even then some owners don't keep them in cords. They are extremely large, but are not commonly kept for pets. They are very dominate, hard headed, and can be dangerous in the wrong hands.

It could also be one of the other flock guardian breeds, a ungroomed Great Pyrenees, Akbash, Pyrenean Mastiff or possibly an Anatolian(but they are normally lighter built).

The only other breeds that come to mind is the Spanish Mastiff(Mastin Espanol) or Caucasian Ovtcharka. Good luck!!

I would say that sounds just like my neighbors dog, and he is an Old English Sheepdog. I also would refer you to www.dogbreedinfo.com as it is an excellent site on dog information. It has information on everything from looks and size to temperment and activity. Check it out! Hope this helps!!

Basing this on your description and your update with a "close-but-not-quite" pic, my guess would be a Bouvier des Flandres. The color you described fits into their color range, and the size seems to fit. Here's the AKC description: http://www.akc.org/breeds/bouvier_des_fl...

and here's a website that's got some real pics that might be helpful: http://sleepingladysbouviers.com/home.ht...

You've definitely piqued my curiosity, so let us know what you find out!
