i would take him to a vet or an emergency clinic just to be safe. he could have been bitten by a spider, rat, or a mouse.

Take the dog to the vets straight away for a proper diagnosis, those on the internet are unable to see it nor diagnose it and that could prove life-threatening to your dog. Seek proper medical advice immediately.

Trip to the vet.

Exactly how big is the 'hole"

A spider bite would be two tiny "fang" like marks with slight reddening around the bite mark (As most spiders, while not posionous can be irratating to most skin.)

Whether or not a spider bite is posionous is dependant upon whether you live in an area where spiders, like the brown recluses, are abundant.

It could be a puncture wound of some type... as well..

Don't discount bebe guns, because it just may not have fully penetrated the skin.

Either way it sounds like whatever it is is infected and should be seen by a veterinarian.

**Edit**

About your "cold / shaking" comment... to reitterate... the way you described the "hole" or bump with crusty stuff... it sounds like it could be an infection, and an infection can make the dog ill, especially if left too long.

Also... take a look at this, and tell me if this is what you see... if it is... its called ringworm and you'll need the vet to give you some topical antibiotic, possibly oral too.

this is what a dog's hot spot looks like

again, you'll need a topical ointment. Hotspots can usually be taken care of with over the counter meds...

however, you'll need it diagnosed by a vet as if you're not trained to know the differences between skin infections in animals, you could be masking the real problem by treating it for another.

Need to go to the vet,,,,,it could be a hotspot that needs anitbiotics or sometimes if they gets a small injury flies lay their eggs in the dogs body,,,,,needless to say either way he needs to go the vet.

Don't panic...it sounds like a bug or spider bite. Just take him into the bathroom. I have done this on all my dogs when they get hurt or cut or even bit. First I guess I should say...you need a spray handle or hand held shower nozzle. Use warm water and spray off the wound....use circular motion with spray around the area until it looks clean...dry him off and apply some Neosporin or some other meds to area. Do this each day and it will heal faster.

If no sprayer...just clean it good with wet rag and use meds as above.
