My dog hates or is scared of my sister? WHY?!?

I have a 1 year old akita/husky/lab mix. He likes certain people, but not others and I can't find the connection. My boyfriend had mostly guys over and he never seems to have a problem with guys..there is only one guy he has an issue with that I know of (my dad). I have a female roomate that he has always been fine with. My issue is this-I live in an apartment but I am moving back home with my family next week. I had my mom and sister over my apartment today[they have been here about 2 or 3 times before]. My dog really likes my mom, he licks her and sits with her..but he HATES..or is scared of? my sister. His hair goes up and he doesnt stop growling at her. (He has bitten a little boy before) My sister is 15. I thought maybe he sensed her fear, but my mom was scared also? She has never been mean to him. Im so scared he will end up biting her..and I am moving home with her next week! Please help me with reasons why he is scared and what i can do to fix it!!

I had a male akita for 14 years and there were just certain people he did or did not like. It had nothing to do with whether they were afraid or unstable people. One in particular was a female frien who loved animals and was one of the nicest persons you could meet. My dog hated her. He got along well with some children and did not like othere. He had bitten a boy at one time and viciously tried to attack a couple of other friends. He was loved by those who knew him, but everyone knew that he was not a dog that everyone could associate with. He was well trained, do that had nothing to do with it. I believe that animals are like people, there are some people they just don't like no matter what they do. For my dogs protection he stayed on the leash with me at all times and was never allowed outside or alone without me being around or having him restrained . You will be able to tell by his hair or how he pays attention to certain individuals if there is going to be a problem or not. Do not push the issue. Protect both your dog and them by not allowing them near the dog and simply state he is not friendly towards all people. Keep your sister away from you dog when he is not restrained and tell her not to go near him unless you are close enough to stop an attack. He may never get to like her and it is up to you to protect him from an adverse situation and to advise your sister to stay away.

Some dogs are afraid of cirtain people, Your sister should just stay there and I believe one day the dog will go to her and sit in her lap, It will happen. I have a pomeranian, And she hated me at first. But now she loves me.

Your dog probably is uncomfortable with her because she's not familiar. Does she look like you? Does your mom look like you? Most dogs warm up to people eventually. For now, just tell your sister to leave the dog alone for awhile, then maybe after a few weeks, start petting the dog and offering treats. The dog will soon get to know she won't hurt him.

what you really want to do is take the dog to a behavioral expert for socialization to get him use to other animals and other people... ANY other animals and ANY other people.

even ones he doesn't like. he needs to learn to react to them in a positive way.

If he's biting... you could be in for a lawsuit evetually if its not taken care of now.

the best thing to do is take him to a behavioral specialist with your entire family, including the ones he dislikes...

and the ones he's ok with should take a backseat while the ones he dislikes work with him in the training.

When it comes to an aggressive dog, never scold them, make loud noises or punish them for bad behavior as this will most likely set them off, or cause them to regress further.

you'll need to train with positive reinforcement, and its going to take time.

but if he already bit someone, and he's prime to bite your sister, it NEEDS to be done lest a judge tell you he needs to be euthanised as a known vicious dog.

I liked the mendocino website that somebody else recommended. YOU need to be calm and unafraid, as does your sister, and it might help her to remember that the quickest way to a dog's affections is through its stomach.
