Which breed of dog would make a good guard dog? I will need the dog to ride in and protect my servic

Hello, my name is Dustin and I appreciate every single person who takes the time to help me in my decision. Thank you so much.

I am a plumber and I will be going into business for myself, hopefully in about 6 months. I intend to purchase a service truck and load it with all of my tools and equipment. Most of the smaller tools will be kept in locked tool box's, but the larger equipment will need to be left in the bed of the truck. I am concerned about theft of my tools / equipment / material from the bed of the truck. I thought it might be a good idea to have a dog that could ride in the back of the truck, and guard my stuff while I am working inside, going into a parts house etc. I also thought it might be nice to have a companion with me on the jobsite. I have never owned a dog before, therefore I know very little about them. I think I would like to have a medium to large size dog that is smart, not vicious but protective, and doesn't shed a lot of hair. Any suggestions? THANKS!

German Shepherd! Out of all the watchdog breeds, this one seems the most easy-going, better if you're bringing it around with you alot. Dalmatians (and Dobermans too I believe) really like to run around and hate being left alone, so not the best to leave tied up.

But... I don't know if leaving a dog in a truck all day is the best idea for the dog, especially if you are inside for a long time. You could give it a long leash, but that has pretty high potential to annoy anybody walking by on the street.

In any case, if you do this, just make sure you visit the dog lots and don't leave it in the truck by itself for too long!

You really might want to consider other ways of protecting your gear, though. Like maybe a panel van, or one of those lockable covers you can put over the back of a truck.

(Unless you're mainly working in the country, in that case the dog idea is pretty feasible. In the city would be more of an issue, since the dog would have to be pretty tightly restrained to prevent it from chasing people and cars while you're away...)

Most large breed dogs shed alot of hair. I think that a German Shepherd would be your best bet. They are naturally protective so there is really not that much special training you would have to do. Shepherds are extremly smart. Very loyal, ANd pretty intemidating looking to people who are about to do somthing stupid unless they ahve a weapon ready of somesort. then your best bet would to be put an alarm in your service truck. High end with the remote warning system.

Dalmation. Not only are they unique in appearance and great companion animals, but they are also pretty territorial.

Can't beat a Labrador.

Go with a Rottweiler. Those things are good and protective. So are Pomeranians.

You must live in a really bad part of a really large city, if you have to worry that much about theft of your equipment. You CAN put rings into the bed of the truck, or into the sides, and chain your equipment and lock it down.

You'd need to learn a lot about dogs to do what you intend, as a dog isn't a thing you can just buy and put into your truck. If your dog bites someone, you're liable financially for damages. There are many problems for someone who doesn't know dogs at all. A dog is like raising a child. It needs love and attention. It's not just a worker bee who will sting bad guys and expect nothing from you. It would need to be fed, and given water, training, love and lots of your time. Riding in the back of the truck is not giving the dog any kind of time or attention.

Boxers are great, they are loyal and protective but not vicious, though they look it, I have a Boxer and she intimitates anyone that tries to walk through my gate and acts like she's going to bite them , but has never attacked anyone. THey are average shedders, short haired, but can't be kept in really cold weather or really hot weather due to their inability to keep warm and cool... so if the truck is to be sitting outside in hot or very cold weather, this may not be the breed you'd want... I don't allow my Boxer to be in temps under 45 degrees or over 85 degrees, if that's the case my Boxer is in my house.

Dalmatian, all the traits you listed are reasons the fire departments still keep them around

Also please don't drive with a dog in the open bed of a pickup truck, I've seen dogs lose eyes to rocks from the road. And please do some research on dog care. Good luck I hope your business and your new dog do well

I would suggest you do some research on dogs and their behavior before you commit to an animal who will be totally dependant on you for everything. Any dog can guard, but you cant expect them to just sit in the back of a truck and wait for hours on end. I hope you don't intend to let him ride back there also...! I've seen many dogs come into the vets office due to injuries received when they fell out of the back of their owner's truck.

I highly recommend investing in a good alarm system for your truck and save the dog for the family!!!

The best "guard" dog is one who has been professionally trained to do the job. What you are actually looking for is a "watch" dog. Meaning it will look and sound like a bad@ss but won't be a liability for you. Guard dogs are a liability and are not worth the risk, especially if the dog is going to be in an open truck bed. You may want to think about a shell over your truck bed as an alternative. Also more and more cities are passing laws restricting dogs from riding in truck beds so you need to check you city ordinances. As for a companion go to your local shelter and explain your needs/desires and do some research before you go out and make the commitment to an animal that completely depends on you for everything.

A BOXER OR A ROTTIE

German bred German Shepherd, the East German line is strictly the working line, ie. sable shepherds. Both east and west lines are remarkable. The difference is that there is more of a working line in the west than the east.

I would recommend being trained to handle a working dog before having one for protection. You can search canine handler schools online to find the best one. However, like everyone else has said, you definitely want to make sure that you can care for the dog and not just intend on leaving him/her in the back of your vehicle all day every day. Also, think of the repercussions if your dog would feel your vehicle is threatened by a customer while you are indoors doing work and the customer gets bit. Having a personal protection canine is a lot of work and a lot of responsibility.

I would find a dog at the shelter that was good natured, but looked scary. Since you want the dog to be safe around most people and not have to worry about him attacking anyone, you don't want a dog that is aggressive in general.

I would then train the dog to sit and bark when anyone approached the truck. You're not trying to get the dog upset, just teach a behavior so that a stranger is going to think twice about coming too close. You may want to cue the bark when someone touches the truck so that you don't have a noisy barking dog sitting in your truck as people walk around. Find a trainer to help you with this.

Most dogs will protect their property but the BIG problem is with your idea of having the dog ride in the back of your truck as it simply isn't safe for the dog. Each year thousands of dogs are injured or killed because their owners left them in the back of their trucks and when they put on the brakes, have to swerve, etc the dog is thrown out of the truck.
