My boyfriend's Parents dog she's a lab and chow ok she smells really bad smells the whole house up and she's lost a **** load of hair the only thing I know is that she has fleas and they only gives her a bath once a month.

Bad owners, Chows and Chow mixes need to be brushed DAILY!

Are they using shampoo when they give her a bath?

If they aren't brushing her then the soap can't get to the skin!

Friends of ours have chows and they smell alot. The fur might be falling out because of a flea allergy or from the dog constantly scratching. The dog needs a flea shampoo treatment as soon as possible. To take care of the odor problem there are shampoos on the market that are perfumed. I would wash the dog at least twice a month with a shampoo that is gentle yet contains a nice smell.

The dog might be allergic to the fleas. My friend had a cat that was allergic to fleas and it scratched and pulled all of its hair out. It had to go on medication. It should go to a vet.

the vet is a really good idea. you should really only wash a dog once a month. unfortunatly, some dog breeds just smell more than others.

Having a bath once a month isn't a problem but if she is quite smelly then maybe every two weeks could be better, what they need to do is prevent the fleas with something like frontline. Is the skin around where there is hairl oss red? Perhaps the dog has flea dermatitis, an allergic reaction to the fleas.

Well you answered your own question. They don't bath her and they don't treat her fleas.

There is nothing wrong with the dog that regular grooming and flea control wouldn't help. That's not the dogs fault. It the negligent owners.

As far as the dog loosing it's hair, well it could be a combination of not been cleaned and the fleas, but it could also be the food it is eating. Many dogs who have skin problems have problems with their hair falling out. Just like people we need to bath ourselves and look after any infections or our hair will fall out. And he is probably getting infected between the fleas and the dirt.

of course, the vet is the first order of business, but did you ever think MAYBE the dog is allergic to the shampoo??? try changing shampoos AFTER you take the animal to a vet.
