Putting Weight On My Dog???

i have a female wire-hair Ibizan Hound, who is about 1 1/2 years old.

She is extremely skinny, her ribs can be seen and her hip bones stick out, i know the breed is suppose to be a bit on the skinny side.

she eats usually 3 times a day, we feed her just plan kibble now, but before she got all kinds of different food (mac n cheese, pasta, mashed potato's..) to try and get the weight on, but it didnt seem to help. Shes not sick, the vet said there nothin wrong with her.

She is a show dog, and we have taken a break from the ring for a while, and im wanting to get her back in there, but i would like more weight on her...

any suggestions???

have you talked to the breeder? make sure she is getting a good quality food and try adding some Solid Gold supplement to her food. it will put weight on but be careful as it tends to put to much on.

feed her twice a day, combine the total amount you give her 3x aday and divide it into 2 meals.

you have a sight hound and sight hounds tend to be on the thin side. you want good muscle not fat. i have never seen a heavy Ibizan Hound at the dog shows,if anything it will count against your dog. and no people food.

DON'T FEED TABLE SCRAPS!! That isn't good for her. And it will just make her sick.

If you are really wanting her to gain weight-- feed small, frequent meals.

Put food out for her at ALL times and if she doesn't get better then see a vet

If the vet said she was fine, then stop trying to over do it. Feeding her human food is not the way to go, that is just not good for them. You should try feeding her puppy food, it has a lot of fat in it.

I would suggest taking her to the vet for a check up. I would have him run blood work, fecal, just to rule out anything medically wrong. You might want to put her back onto puppy food until her weight comes back up to normal. You might want to check your dogfood to see if it contains alot of fillers in it, like corn.

Skip all the mac and cheese, potatoes and pasta. This won't help - the carbs won't put weight on her and the wheat in particular is bad for her. Supplement her with a high quality canned food at each meal - 1/2 a can per serving. Look for Innova Evo, California Natural or Candidae. Her kibble should be one of these brands as well.
