My dog is going bald but is not itching no sign of mite either?

She is a 14 months old Dobermann who has recently started to go bald on her back, I have had her to the vet who didn't really know what it was, he put some drops on her neck and said come back in 4 weeks. I am really worried at how much hair she is losing each day, there are a few dried out sores now which are flaking away. She is not scratching or biting so its not bothering her she just looks a mess :(

Anyone got any ideas for promoting her hair to grow back? (wishful thinking!!)

Is she blue or fawn?? Did the vet do a scraping for mites or just a general glance? What are you feeding the dog?

You should have the dog tested for thyroid first.

You should get another vet and have him take a look. Vets don't really see a dog that is losing it's coat like that and have no clue what the problem is. If the dog is blue, then it's related to that.. You should talk to a breeder who produces that colour and is used to trying to get the coat to come back. There are diets online that tell you how to keep the coat.. Search for Jim Anable's site.. I think it is.. He had a blue that he showed, and he had a diet that he used to keep the dog in coat.

Here's Jim's site in the source box

If the vet did'nt really know what it was...what was the drops he put on her? I think I would try another vet.

I would get her tested for allergies...find another vet if you need to. A good vet would have tested your dog before applying those drops---whatever they were.

Sounds like you need to find another vet. You say no sign of mites was a skin scrapping done as mites can only be seen by a microsclpe.

What drops did hte vet us ( sounds like a flea treatment wihich only last 4 weeks)

Definately seek anohter vet.

Also a picture may help.

I would take her back to the vet or to a different one. Did he do a skin scrape(they take a dull surgical blade and scrape the skin just enough to get some skin cells to look for mites)? If she's not itching maybe she doesn't have any but I would still check. Maybe she just has a skin infection which would need antibiotics and maybe some fatty acids to help her coat and skin. She is kinda young to have an underactive thyroid which can cause hairloss in dogs. I would take her back or go get a second opinion.

I would have your vet check the dog for Cushing's Disease.

Has she had a recent flea infestation? Did your vet test her thyroid? Did they do a skin scrape? What brand of food does she eat? What are the ingredients? What were the drops the vet gave her?

If it was only recently that you took her to the vet, it will take about 4 weeks for new hair growth. If you see the area worsening in the meantime (it sounds like she is still losing coat??) I'd call the vet back and ask that they recheck her.
