How to stop a dog from chewing on himself?

I have a small dog - chihuahua/daschund. Recently I noticed he was scratching a lot. Of course, fleas. I gave him a good flea bath and I think I have it under control, but...

he constantly nibbles on the top of his backside. It's like he is scratching with his teeth, I guess. He is starting to loose hair in that spot and the skin looks very tender with some small scabs.

What can I do to get him to stop doing this to himself?

desitin works well. It seems to help my dog that has very bad allergies and scracthes himself raw. My aunt also uses it for her dog that chews on his feet. Her vet told her to use it to help them stop biting and chewing, it seems to help keep the itching down and I don't think they like the smell or taste so they don't chew at the spots until it is all gone.

well i do have a few suggestions it could be because of the fleas or because it is a skin rash but it would probley be best to go see a vet just in case to make sure you dog isn't sick or something

It sounds like a flea allergy, you'll need to take him to a vet. They will probably prescribe an ointment to be put on the affected area and if he is continually doing this they may even suggest one of those collars that goes around the neck and prevents the dog from reaching any areas to nibble at.Good luck my cat did the same thing a few years back.Cleared up pretty quickly.

if he's been mingling with other animals, it might be caused by allergies. bring him to your vet to be sure.

collar him with an E-Collar an elizabethan collar, it's like a lampshade but made of clear plastic and make very sure that the flea situation is gone and treat the skin with a soothing aveeno lotion while it's healing

He's probably allergic to the fleas, it certainly sounds like it.

Flea baths don't work - nothing from a pet store does. It's doubly important to use the proper treatment if your dog is allergic, so pop into a vets for some Frontline - don't apply it within 24 hours of bathing or it can't work. You can also get a Capstar pill to get rid of the immediate problem, but remember it's not a preventative.
