Need advise on an injured leg. My dog got into a fight with the neighbors dog last night through a w

he pulled his leg completely through. A neighboring vet came over and checked it out said he doesn't think their is a break. We applied ice and gave an asprin. The dog will apply some pressure and has laid on that side. But, has yet to bear full weight. Not positive on the breed but he has a lot of hair so swelling is hard to see but the knee is tender to touch. What do think? It was only about 30 min after that I saw him so I'm not sure how he is yet today. Could it be bruised, sprained or even a torn ligament?

Sounds like just a bruise to me - I'd give it a few days before I take him to the vet.

It can be just sore which takes time to heal. Sometimes they make it seem like its worse when your looking to try to get sympathy (just like kids). I would just try to keep an eye on it and give it a couple days.... try more asprin to help the pain. My dog had an injured leg awhile ago and asprin helps big time.

Give it another week, if still not putting full weight on it, take it to the vet, probably torn ligament then. Had a dog that did that, getting it caught in a fence.

yes it could be all those things. i would see how he is this morning. but if not any better then the vet is the best call you could make

My dog had a torn cruciate ligament (hind leg) and had to have surgery. He tended to lie on that side. We decided it felt better for him that way.

Ask your neighbor if you should take the dog to be seen, and since he was so nice, you might want to give him the business when you do take the dog for a vet check.

It could be any of those three: bruised, sprained, torn ligament.

There's a test for the ligament, but if it's torn, it requires surgery... and there are 3 types:

1- traditional - ligament is replaced with simulated ligament

2- TPLO (twice as expensive; ligament removed; bone cut and repositioned and held with metal plate)

3- TTA (same as TPLO, but a different bone cut and configuration)

I suggest you go to Tractor Supply and get some cattle panel so the dogs can't fight through the fence so easily... or some chicken wire.... You don't want a repeat of this incident.

For the ligament, they test what they call the drawer effect, which tests for side-to-side movement of the knee joint, which indicates the ligament is torn and not holding the leg bones in proper position at the knee.

Ask your neighbor how many days you should keep your dog under observation before taking him to the vet.

Human Asprin is terrible for dogs!!! The vet should have prescribed an antibotic and some sedative to help the dog stay off the leg. I would cut the hair off in that area to avoid infections, etc and it would be easier to keep an eye on it. Keep it clean!
