How do I teach my dog to stay off the bed?

I'm 19 weeks pregnant and by the time the baby get here I don't want our dog to be sleeping on the bed. He is a 6 or 7 yr. old basset and are bed is always covered with hair I have to wash it twice a week I mean it's ridiculous. But I don't want to be mean he has already been threw a lot of change he's not with his basset family anymore(we had to get rid of the other 3), we live in a apt. now, I'm in the picture, and now a baby is coming. I feel so bad for him. But tired of laying on a bed of hair

You have received some good advice and some terrible advice. Anything which involves punishment (hitting) is wrong wrong wrong.

The scat matt is a good idea because you aren't doing the consequence. You could also put mice traps on the bed which will scare him as well as balloons under a sheet with thumbtacks taped to them so they pop when he lies on them.

You are wise to start four months before your child is due. Be diligent; expect it to take several weeks or more. Be consistent. Reward him whenever he is not on your bed. This means have treats nearby so that you can instantly reinforce his positive behavior.

You could also train him not to come close to your bed. Be diligent. Don't let up! Never hit.

That is going to be really hard to do. If he is use of being on the bed with you he is going to feel neglected and not loved. And you don't want him jelous of the baby. I would was the comforter as much as I could just so he don't feel neglected. You can't treat him like that so sudden.Good luck!

You can tell him no very firmly and make him get off the bed.

You can put one of those plastic mats with the bumps on the back up there (bump side up) he won't like how it feels and will eventually learn to stay off the bed.

Or you can get what is called a scat mat, which is a plastic mat that you can put on the bed and it gives him a little jolt every time he jumps up there (think a 9-Volt battery on your tongue -- it doesn't hurt, just startles him).

Also, maybe you can get him a bed to sleep on that is in your bedroom, so he can still be close, just not on your bed.

Good luck!

Whn he goes on the bed take him down and say no. If he continues to try to get up redirect his attention with a toy...reward after he plays with the toy and say good boy. It is going to take consistency on your part and everyone else in the home. He may cry and bark at 1st but have toys handy that he is allowed to play with and get him either a crate or his own bed and put it next to yours so he feels he is getting the better deal in the situation.

you need to condition him to stay off the bed. first designate a new spot for him. whenever he goes to his new spot, you give him a treat and whenever he gets on the bed you give him a light bop on the nose. it is called positive and negative reinforcement. it will work well with your child as well. congrats and good luck!

all u have to do is try to put it in its cage when you leave. Also you have to keep your door closed and tell it to stay out! Another tip is you have to treat it nice and give it treats every time he gets off. I don't know if this will help you but it did to me!

what works for me with all of my animals, two dogs and three cats is a squirt bottle. Just squirt them once when he jumps on the bed then hopefully he will get down.. when ever our animals act up we just give them a squirt then they stop...
