Hi. I adopted a neglected bison pup/dog 7 months ago. He is extremely well cared for here. He is neutered and approx. 1 or 1 1/2 years old. I noticed his penis was swollen and pertruding during our daily 4 mile walk. I took him to the vet (the pertrusion was gone), she said he may've smelled a female in heat. My male shih-tzu did not have the problem. I thought maybe the good weather was a factor... (i didn't know). However, I have noticed this pertrusion 5 or 6 times since then. Which is probably within a month. However, I did shave his hair shorter.... maybe i am just noticing it now. However, what makes this happen... is he okay? He is also starting to lick it. The only concern he has that i know of, is his skin ailment. he has allergies and bites his paws alot. can you help? Thanks in advance.

That happens when they get "excited". And yes, it is possible for a neutered male to get "excited". My male does it sometimes. I tell him to put it away. lol.

As for his licking it, he's just keeping it clean. Practicing good hygiene you might say.

I don't know what makes it happen, but one of my male dogs (neutered) has that happen fairly often as well and he's been perfectly healthy since we got him 10 years ago, so I wouldn't worry about it, even if it is a little gross.

I had one of my dogs ( I breed retriever so I have had quite a few male dogs over 25 years) do that when he was a juvenile. Put it down to testosterone, it is likey he is having an erection. He will grow out of it.
